AKRON -- A man is recovering from gunshot wounds after being shot by police after officers say he broke into a home and began assaulting a homeowner.
The homeowner was inside his Lafollette Street home last night at 11:30 p.m. on the phone with a friend when he heard a crash at the back of the house. The homeowner then noticed a man-- described by police as homeless-- enter the damaged rear door with a rifle.
Accordingn to police, the man identified as Mark Losh, 23, then began to punch the homeowner and put a knife to the homeowner's neck. The friend on the phone heard the commotion and called for help.
When officers arrived they observed the fight between Losh and the homeowner. Police went into the home and say that's when Losh picked up the rifle. When ordered to drop the gun, police say Losh raised the rifle t oward the officers.
One officer fired several shots hitting Losh in the stomach.
Police took Losh to the hospital where his injuries do not appear to be life threatening. The homeowner had minor injuries to his face and neck. The police officers were not hurt.
Losh faces charges of aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery, felonious assault and assault on a police officer.
He is described as an acquaintance of the homeowner.
