Steubenville Schools Placed On Lockdown After Possible Threat On Twitter

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - Officials were investigating on Tuesday after a student reported reading a possible threat against the Steubenville City School District on Facebook.

According to a police report from Steubenville, district school buildings were placed under lockdown on Tuesday morning because of the possible threat.

A mother called police and reported that her son saw the threat on Facebook that originally was a Tweet.

According to police, the Tweet, from KnightSec, a group that associates itself with the “hacktavist” group Anonymous, stated that those who have not been charged in the high school rape case were to come to a certain location or “I am going to start killing people.”

The student said that he tried to access the posting again, but it was removed.  The student specified to police that the posting said the tweet said the group would “shoot up the schools,” if the “tweet kids” weren’t at a certain location.

Police said that they interviewed the student, who said that he saw the threat, and it was determined that the threat was not viable or verifiable.  Police said he told them there were no specifics given on the meet-up location or schools targeted.

The district’s lockdown was lifted after approximately 1 ½  hours.

School officials said that parents were notified via an automated messaging system about the lockdown.

The district’s superintendent said that because of the attention the district is receiving about the rape case involving two high school football payers, guards will be stationed at all school doors until further notice.
