This incident would later lead to California enforcing a highly restrictive law on firearms, including the controversial "10-round magazine-only" law for most firearms owned by state residents

These were legal guns modified to be full automatic. Like the US M-16, (AR 15) these guns were manufactured to be full auto, but with a selector switch for the US legal version that was only semi auto. A minor conversion makes these guns FULL AUTO. There are many target shooters who compete using the AR platform, many homeowners have a AR for homedefense, millions of law abiding citizens own a AR-15.
