Romney Attacks Obama on Defense Spending

By Colleen McCain Nelson

    Associated Press
Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney holds a baby after making a campaign stop at American Legion Post 176, Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, in Springfield, Va.

SPRINGFIELD, Va. – Mitt Romney on Thursday cast the president as a weak commander-in-chief who is willing to compromise the country’s military strength even though the world remains a dangerous place.

At a “Veterans for Romney” event in northern Virginia, the Republican presidential nominee offered assurances that he would avert military spending cuts and protect services for veterans. Mr. Romney continued to blame Barack Obama for deep cuts to defense that are scheduled to take effect next year. The planned spending reductions, known as sequestration, are the result of a bipartisan deal that was supported by many Republicans in Congress.

Mr. Romney, though, told the veterans in Springfield that “the White House proposed this sequestration, kind of a gun-to-your-head opportunity.”

He said the idea of cutting military spending at a time when threats loom around the world is unthinkable and devastating.

“When I become president of the United States, we will stop it,” Mr. Romney said.

The Republican candidate told the veterans who gathered at an American Legion hall that he was attuned to the challenges they faced after serving their country.

Mr. Romney decried the backlog of veterans’ disability claims and the hurdles veterans face when they seek counseling or other services. “How can this be?” he said. If the spending cuts are implemented, veterans and active-duty service members will suffer, he said.

“Given the needs of our veterans, how in the world, as commander in chief, you could stand by as we shrink our military commitment financially is something that I don’t understand, and I will reverse it,” Romney said.

The Obama campaign said that Mr. Romney wrote off half of all Americans, including many veterans and service members, when he described 47 percent of the country as dependent on government and as viewing themselves as victims. In a statement, Lis Smith, spokeswoman for the Obama campaign, blamed Mr. Romney for the planned cuts, saying he has failed to lead his party toward an agreement that would avert sequestration.

“He’s stood in the way of preventing devastating automatic defense cuts,” Ms. Smith said of the Republican nominee.

Yep, we have the capability of destroying the entire Solar System with Nuclear warheads, but even that isn't enough for the right wingnuts.

Perhaps they will stop building nukes once they can destroy the milky way galaxy.

The US military budget is higher than all other nations combined.

Good! That's the way it should be!

Oh and I fully support the building and 'threat of use' of nuclear weapons

PRE-EMPTIVE, HOMELAND SECURITY, PATRIOT ACT

ALL of which are endorsed and supported by current leader of America....

hope and change what?

oh, they're hoping that the generation changes so quick that they don't remember what it was like to think for themselves
protect themselves, feed themselves, clothe themselves, wash themselves, house themselves etc etc.....

the change is coming and so is the singularity....already our current leaders are becoming irrelevant

No Right Turn
Andrew Harrop, Natan Doron

Britain’s enduring support for public services

The political right, and many on the left, have long assumed that the people of Britain want the state to be smaller. But new Fabian research suggests that progressive advocates for the state and tax-funded public services have reason to be confident. ‘No Right T urn’ is based on original qualitative and quantitative research which explores how people respond to some of the main arguments for and against the state and public services. Over nine hours of focus groups plus a nationally representative opinion poll provide a rich picture of how the public view the debate around the role of the state.

The idea that we all depend on public services at different stages of our lives, and that tax-funded public ser vices are a way of caring for those less fortunate in our society , were both popular . So too were the themes of contribution and desert, with the importance that public services play throughout everyone’s life cycle a key theme.

The left should resist the urge to seek out a middle-way that cedes ground to the right on public ser vice debates. Labour can be confident and bold in making pro-state arguments and can set out a collectivist case for maintaining high quality, tax-funded public services.
