Residents of Chongqing, China got quite a surprise when they looked out at the Yangtze River yesterday Sept 8th: The river, which usually has a golden-brown hue, had been dyed a deep red-orange, and nobody knows why! The crimson coloration first appeared yesterday where the Yangtze meets the Jialin River, but it was also reported at other points along China’s longest river. Officials are currently investigating the cause of the dramatic color change, but so far they haven’t arrived at any conclusive answers.
The strange thing is that it happened overnight. There was no gradual color change.
Red tide is a common name for a phenomenon also known as an algal bloom, an event in which estuarine, marine, or fresh water algae accumulate rapidly in the water column and results in discoloration of the surface water.

Although Red Tide usually occurs in salt water, it can also occur in fresh water under the right conditions. A short lived Fresh Water Red Tide bloom occurred in Clear Lake California.

Ahh, red tide!! At my previous job I saw it often when in Freeport, TX. Actually, I saw it in surfside beach, which was a few miles to the southeast of freeport. You would think a town called Surfside Beach would be a touristy beach town...it was anything but...unless you consider oil rig platforms and industrial ships in the distance as scenic! Not to mention the dead fish washing up on shore.

Revelations and Nostradamus get brought up about every 10 years to justify some horrific mass killings perpetuated by the state. It started before the invasion of Kuwait, airing shows about Nostradamus and the book of Revelations on the History Channel, it was used for 9/11 and the second invasion of Iraq and the invasion of Afghanistan.
I'm afraid the Christian war mongers will look at the red river as a sign of the second coming and feel that we need to attack Iran to start Armageddon.

BEIJING—China reported falling imports and lackluster growth in exports for August, the latest set of worrying data to come out of the world's second-largest economy.

The trade data released on Monday followed similar signs of weakness over the weekend from industrial-production figures. Meanwhile, inflation showed initial signs of rising, highlighting the dilemma faced by policy makers over how forcefully to respond to China's weakest economic growth since the onset of the global financial crisis in 2007.
China's leaders face concerns that overly aggressive stimulus efforts could reinflate a property bubble or increase inflation pressures, which are already likely to rise further in coming months amid climbing food prices.
"The Chinese economy is now still lingering at the bottom, as the policy support has not been as strong as people expected earlier," said UBS economist Wang Tao.

China's trade surplus widened in August to $26.7 billion from $25.1 billion in July on falling imports, surpassing a median $17.2 billion forecast by 11 economists in a Wall Street Journal survey. Imports fell 2.6% from a year earlier, comparing with a median forecast of a 3.4% increase.
Exports rose 2.7% in August from a year earlier, data from the General Administration of Customs showed Monday. This was up from July's 1.0% rise and above economists' median forecast of a 2.5% expansion.

China's Growth Plans Tested China Real Time: Economists React On Sunday, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed value-added industrial output in China rose 8.9% in August from a year earlier, down from a 9.2% increase in July, and the slowest growth since May 2009. The industrial-production figure was slightly less than the 9% rise predicted by economists polled ahead of the release.
Slower industrial production growth was likely due to continued destocking of inventories in areas including the steel industry as well as weak domestic demand, Ms. Wang said. She expected the destocking process to continue until the fourth quarter or perhaps the first quarter of next year.
The country's Consumer Price Index rose 2% from a year earlier in August, up from July's 1.8% rise and in line with expectations. The main driver was the price of food, which rose 3.4% from a year earlier, compared with a 2.4% rise in July.
Economists have warned that China's inflation is likely to pick up in the coming months due to the upswing in global food prices caused by drought conditions in the U.S. The expected rise in inflation "won't prevent policy makers from loosening further if the economy is very weak, but it makes aggressive stimulus much less likely," research firm Capital Economics said in a note.
One of the few bright spots in an otherwise gloomy data set came from property. Sales of residential floor space expanded 13.3% year-to-year in August, a sign that the government's strict controls on sales—intended to control runaway prices—are starting to fray.
Stronger sales have prompted developers to break ground on new developments. New residential floor space under development expanded 4.9% year-to-year in August, the first month of growth since the end of 2011. A sustained return to investment in China's real-estate sector would encourage growth in the final months of the year.
China's government so far has contented itself with relatively modest attempts to support the economy. The central bank hasn't followed up its interest-rate cuts in June and July with further moves, and those moves don't appear to have prompted resurgence in bank lending. Loan officers with two of China's major banks said concerns about risks in the economy prevented a rebound in lending in August.
The cautiousness follows concerns that China's massive stimulus spending-and-lending binge in the months following the 2008 global financial crisis fueled a property-price bubble and saddled local governments and banks with debt.
Ma Xiaoping, an economist at HSBC Holdings PLC, said the central bank was likely to cut the amount of deposits it requires banks to hold in reserve—which it has cut three times since November—if banking system liquidity is tight. Lowering the level frees up more money for banks to lend. But another interest-rate cut has become less likely or may be delayed due to the inflation data, she said.
The government has also increased fiscal spending and accelerated approval for new investment projects. The National Development and Reform Commission—a powerful government planning agency—approved 1,555 major investment projects in the year to August, a 13% increase over the same period in 2011.
Most recently, the commission last week approved dozens of infrastructure projects such as subways and highways, which Nomura estimated would add up to one trillion yuan ($157.6 billion) of investment over four years.
There could be more to come. Speaking at a meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in Vladivostok, Russia, on Saturday, President Hu Jintao warned that China's economy faces "notable downward pressure" and addressed the need to upgrade infrastructure to promote stable growth and recovery.
HSBC's Ms. Ma said the effects of the infrastructure spending could show up in fixed-asset investment figures in the coming months. Fixed-asset investment in nonrural areas, a closely watched indicator of construction materials and machinery demand, rose by 20.2% in the January-August period, down from 20.4% in January-July.
"Stabilizing investment is still the key to stabilizing growth and the government is heading to the right direction," Ms. Ma said.
