I'm one of those people that gets anxious when we have bad storms. My Mom was brought up for ex. when she went to St. Adalberts school and there was a storm all of the girls had to even take out any bobby pins from their hair etc.  So from an early age I learned to fear them. Then once when my Dad had the garage on Bradley St. I'm thinking this storm was in the late 60's lightning hit the wires and metal post above the garage, sounded like a loud explosion and we had to jump into a car in the garage.

While my kids growing up when ever they warned of a possible tornado in the area I'd make them go into our basement. Our basement is old school,  crumbling cement. LOTS of spider and cobwebs, just downright creepy : )

I've gotten better though, watched some of the lightning the other night out the window, flashing like every second.

So your personal experiences growing up and seeing thunderstorms and some of the dangers (and old wives tales), you've learned to take reasonable precautions.  You didn’t have to wait for a governor to warn you 24 hour prior of the approaching unpredictable storms.  

I'm pretty confident that you would know what to do if you looked up and seen dark clouds and heard rumbles of thunder.

Personally I like to watch thunderstorms.  When I lived on Sacandaga, I had a good view to see storms
approach then follow the storm as it went down the lake.

I've also been surprised by a storm while sailing.  The forecast was for only a 15% chance of thunderstorms, and
the sky was mostly blue with a few white clouds.  In an hours time a storm approached, dumped lots of rain and
lightning, then blew through and was gone... followed by mostly blue skys again.

IMO, storm warnings are there for those who want it.  For some in the construction trade, or farmers, a storm
alert can save them dollars.  Others like golfers or sailors can use accurate weather forecasts to plan their day.

The technology is there... why not use it.

Bottom line here..............folks don't know how to take care of themselves any longer!!
It is apparent that they rely solely on GOV ALMIGHTY to tell them when/what to eat, sh!t, be fearful....etc.
Folks have actually lost the common sense ability of 'self survival'!
God only knows how humans have been able to populate this earth!!

The technology is there... why not use it.

This isn't a warning issued by the National Weather Service.  This is a storm warning issued by THE GOVERNOR OF NEW YORK STATE.  I have no problem with warning from the national weather service of approaching storms.  You know, when you turn on TV or radio and they can actually track the storm cells and the direction it is traveling and the speed.  The meteorologists can usually track the storms an hour in advance and almost pin point when and where the storms are going to hit.  But a GOVERNOR issuing a press release warning of possible storms 24 in advance is purely political.  He may as well issued a press release on July 1st warning New Yorker's to prepare for a high likelyhood of severe thunderstorms that can occure between July 1st and September 1st.  

I've been in the basement all day today as a safety precaution in response to the catastrophic storms Cuomo warned about.  I haven't been upstairs all day, and my basement windows have been boarded up to protect against the forecasted tornados.  I know it isn't 10pm yet, I was wondering if anybody knows if it is safe to go outside yet.

No, my elected master told me to clamor for safety because of the severe weather.  When the dear leader speaks, I listen.  NO QUESTIONS ASKED!

Actually, the warnings and watches were issued by the National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK (yesterday) deemed the conditions were ripe for VERY severe storms across upstate New York and advised the Governor to make preparations.

The governor is governor of ALL the state and not just this area --- so the warning and preparations were broad because the predicted path of these storms included most of Upstate New York.  Elmira was hit with a possible tornado and the lower Hudson Valley had a possible tornado as well.

I think the Governor made the right call by taking the additional precautions and preparing for the worst.

It is irresponsible for a governor to alarm 19 million people because of possible thunderstorms.  There are local news and radio stations that are fully capable of warning regional viewers of approaching storms.  Like it has been done for at least 2 decades.  

Cuomo should get out ahead of the winter season and tell New Yorkers to prepare for a snow storm that will likely hit somewhere in New York between mid October and early April.

Read VERY CAREFULLY --- the National Weather Service's storm prediction center notified the Governor and the public yesterday that conditions were ripe for  VERY DANGEROUS STORMS -- not just typical summer thunderstorms -- but the type of storms that produce tornadoes and damaging straight line winds.   They recommended that the Governor and the state prepare to respond to significant damaging storms.

The FACT is that a tornado did hit Elmira and there was the possibility of another in Orange County.  And last I checked Elmira in Chemung County  and Orange County were still in the State of New York.  Oh -- and there has been some other damage and power outages in the Catskills and other parts of the state.  

So the Governor - who is Governor of ALL the state and not just your backyard - was absolutely correct in having the state emergency center on alert and in making all of the other preparations to respond to these storms WHICH DID IN FACT CAUSE SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE IN PARTS OF THE STATE.

Much alarm but no storm
Weather experts had the region in a twist, but bad weather goes elsewhere

Once again, it was the storm that never was.

Tornadoes and severe thunderstorms wreaked havoc across the central part of New York on Thursday. All day the media and the meteorologists warned, they appeared to be headed directly for the Capital Region.

Then the forecast was revised to just Greene and Columbia counties in this area. Eventually, it just dropped a smidgen of rain on our parched lawns and drifted off.

Other parts of the state were not so lucky. A possible tornado, or at least very strong winds, whipped through downtown Elmira, ripping off roofs and downing trees and power lines. Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency in Chemung County. Almost 100,000 lost power in the Southern Tier and Hudson Valley.

As the storm bore down, Cuomo and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg warned people to seek cover and stay away from windows.

In New York City, they took Instagram photos of menacing clouds that looked like the ones in the "Ghostbusters" movie. People throughout the Catskills tweeted along with the raindrops and tracked the storm as it bullied its way across the mountains.

Like so many times this winter, the severe weather we were warned about just never panned out. Cry wolf???  The Gov was informing the entire state Shadow... the message wasn't directed only at you.
