NEW YORK (AP) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo is urging New Yorkers to be prepared for severe thunderstorms.
Thursday's storms are predicted to bring heavy rain, high winds and possible tornadoes that may cause widespread power outages.
Cuomo says weather officials have predicted a moderate risk of severe weather for the state.
He says the State Emergency Operations Center will be activated at 1 p.m. Thursday and urged residents to pay close attention to local radio and television reports.
Officials say families and individuals should have an emergency kit and an emergency plan in place. The kit should include items such as non-perishable food, water, a portable radio, flashlights and extra batteries.

Many people don't plan ahead for anything and that is why you have people flocking to Walmarts for batteries and flashlights after they lose their power. If this storm does cause damage like fallen trees and power wires people should be prepared for road delays and power outs, this should be common sense but like you said many are to stupid to take precautions

Every home should have a minimum what they call a 72 hour bag, this is basically just the basics to get you through a 3 day period where you might not be able to get out or go to the store.
3 days worth of water, minimum should be 1 gallon per person per day. ( don't rely on your faucet to give you water) 3 days worth of food flashlights/candles/lightsticks/lanterns batteries first aid kit, extra medication one might take Deck of cards or something to keep you occupied so you don't go nuts
That is really all one should need to make it for 3 days

The storms will begin to form around 2 p.m., according to Steve DiRienzo, a meteorologist with the weather service, bringing wind gusts of up to 40 mph and hail as large as two inches.
Precisely where the storms will be the strongest is nearly impossible to predict, DiRienzo said, but anywhere from southern Saratoga County, to Albany, to portions of Columbia County could see the most severe weather.
As of 8 a.m., the Capital Region was at moderate risk for severe weather, DiRienzo said.
The meteorologist said that there is a five percent chance that tornados could develop in any of those areas. The storms could linger from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m.

Nah, this isn't "anti-big government", its pro-personal responsibility and self reliance.
Thunderstorms are not government classified information. That information can't be kept secret. Unless there is a way to disguise thunder clouds to look like blue skies and silence thunder and lightning.
You'll never hear me say "why didn't they tell us about the approaching storm". I won't give the power of weather to the government.
I'm one of those people that gets anxious when we have bad storms. My Mom was brought up for ex. when she went to St. Adalberts school and there was a storm all of the girls had to even take out any bobby pins from their hair etc. So from an early age I learned to fear them. Then once when my Dad had the garage on Bradley St. I'm thinking this storm was in the late 60's lightning hit the wires and metal post above the garage, sounded like a loud explosion and we had to jump into a car in the garage.
While my kids growing up when ever they warned of a possible tornado in the area I'd make them go into our basement. Our basement is old school, crumbling cement. LOTS of spider and cobwebs, just downright creepy : )
I've gotten better though, watched some of the lightning the other night out the window, flashing like every second.
