For all the criticism of the now-reversed decision on the Saratoga parade, ya know, these types of parades typically include the OFFICIALs of the respective towns walking in the parade.

Wonder if one official will walk in it.

Nah.   Probably just sit in a chair near the reviewing stand at the end.     Walking a block is too much

Parade honors firefighters who battled flood
BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter

    For firefighters contending with the flood response in Rotterdam Junction and Pattersonville last summer, volunteering quickly became a full-time job with lots of overtime.
    Many started the evening after Tropical Storm Irene dumped roughly 12 inches of rain on the region and continued for 12-hour shifts that went on for nearly two weeks. They monitored the Mohawk River, evacuated homes and then helped pump out homes after the surging waterway inundated vast swaths of the two hamlets.
    “We had our hands full,” recalled Pattersonville Fire Chief Glenn Urys. “It came so quick.”
    But the unpaid men and women from Rotterdam’s eight fi re districts never relented in their charge. Instead, they coordinated a massive evacuation of the hamlets and then spearheaded an equally sizeable recovery effort to help those areas worst effected by Irene and Tropical Storm Lee, which followed a week later.
    Their efforts were recognized Thursday during Rotterdam’s annual Memorial Day parade. Organizers selected the eight fire chiefs to serve as grand marshals for the parade as a way to thank them and their departments for the fl ood response.
    Members of two local Girl Scout troops presented each chief with a bouquet as the parade marched to its conclusion at Rotterdam Town Hall. Co-organizer Andy Yuhasz said the flowers were a surprise addition to the march and aimed at thanking the departments for their tireless efforts during the fl ood response.
    “Each and every one of them deserve a pat on the back,” he said.
    Yuhasz said honoring the chiefs and their respective departments seemed fitting on a holiday recognizing the selfl ess sacrifices of servicemen and women. He said they rose to the occasion and performed with aplomb.
    “They don’t get paid for doing it,” he said, removing his hat as a fire company marched by. “They do it because they’re neighbors or because they’re friends.”
    In typical fashion, the chiefs were humble about their respective contributions. Rotterdam Junction Fire Chief Shawn Taylor said he was simply happy to see how fi refighters from his 42-member department and others answered the call of duty.

That was a "Volunteer Firefighter Parade!!!!!!!!!!!

Memorial Day is to remember the deceased members of U.S. Armed Forces who fought in wars against our country.   Please explain how in a DEM town, a parade that does NOT HONOR veterans by FAILING to have member(s) of the U.S. Armed Forces as grand marshal(s) is a Memorial Day parade?

I'm not disputing what the volunteer (firefighters) did during the flood stuff, but let's be honest here, DV, if there is going to be a parade to honorthe volunteer efforts after last years storms such a parade MUST be held SEPARATE from a Memorial Day parade---the purpose of which is to honor of the dead who fought for this country, AND the SEPARATE parade MUST honor ALL volunteers NOT JUST firefighters.   There were many many many many many many many many many many many many many many many volunteers who got involved too and they ARE ENTITLED to be honored alongside the volunteer firefighters.

And on top of that, where was the entire Dem Town Board?  The only one from the Town Board that made an appearance was... Not Supervisor Buffardi... Not Deputy Supervisor Calder... but... Councilman Mike Viscusi?  Where were the rest of them?  

Also, I don't remember, but did Legislator Jasenski decide that he had more important things to do?  He wasn't there, either.  Wasn't this when they're supposed to get out there and let people know that they're here for them?  

And if this parade, with the Fire Chiefs as the Grand Marshall was supposed to be to celebrate the recovery of Rotterdam Junction and Pattersonville, why was it held in Rotterdam proper and not out in the Junction?  

I bet out there, there wouldn't have been half of the traffic concerns, including old ladies trying to drive around police cars that were blocking the streets to protect the people attending the parade.

This was clearly inappropriate for a Memorial Day parade! I don't think that there is ONE person who would object to the rescue workers being recognized for their 'trained' work during the flood. However...........NOT at a Memorial function that was created to recognize those who have fought and died in battle.

These rescue workers should have been 'recognized' at a scheduled rotterdam town board meeting............like they have done in the past with other 'recognitions'.  And it is also a discredit to all of the businesses and churches that donated their money, time, services and supplies during this tragedy.

So being that it was done on a day when americans are 'suppose' to recognize the VETERANS....coupled with leaving out all of the others that helped/donated during the flood............it was inappropriate at best...........imho

I guess I really don't have an issue with Firefighters and First Responders being reccognized on Memorial day, along WITH Veterans.

Veterans get their own day - Nov  11 (unless that's a Sunday - then it's held on the following Monday)

A "Memorial" day should remember those that have served for their fellow man, country and God - not just war veterans.

IMHO.

The day is to 'remember' the war dead. Now it is a catch-all.

What is GROSSLY INAPPROPRIATE is that the Nayboobs feel it is necessary to politicize and use a community's Memorial Day Parade as a "pawn" in their ongoing, twisted, hate-filled and phenomenally immature/ignorant attack on everyone that they disagree with.
