May 09—SCHENECTADY — A felon snickered and uttered "Wow" while being led out the courtroom Wednesday after a judge set bail at $500,000 cash for his alleged role in a violent vandalism spree against the Rotterdam man now dating his friend's ex-girlfriend.
The defense attorney for Michael Chambers had asked Schenectady County Judge Karen Drago for bail to be $25,000 because his client is a lifelong local resident who doesn't have the money to make even that amount.
Assistant District Attorney John Healy asked the judge to keep the defendant in jail without bail. The prosecutor emphasized the serious nature of the accusations, noting that Chambers, who has two previous felonies, now faces felony arson charge that carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Healy said the case is still being presented to a grand jury, which has taken action on some of the criminal charges that have not been made public.
The prosecutor also stated that Chambers previously failed to show up for court appearances at least six times.
Chambers was released from state prison in 2007 after serving three years for grand larceny.
On Wednesday, he told Drago that he had most recently lived on Draper Avenue in Rotterdam for a month but he could only remember the first name of one of the people in the home. He acknowledged having been incarcerated and at times homeless.
Last month, he was arrested along with his girlfriend, Amy Brzoza, and his friend, Larry Ahrens, following a nearly two-month long investigation into attacks on a home off High Bridge Road in Rotterdam. That residence was targeted because Ahrens was upset that the man living there was going out Ahrens' former girlfriend.
Police and prosecutors said Ahrens paid Chambers $100 on more than one occasion time to throw an explosive device consisting of a homemade container that used compressed flash powder and a fuse at the new boyfriend's residence.
The victim, whose name is not being released by police, had five incidents occur at his home beginning with a screwdriver attack that damaged the siding.
The defendants are also accused of blowing up the windshield on the victim's truck on March 11 and throwing explosive devices at the home on March 17 and March 24. The victim, a man in his 40s, moved out after the March 11 incident.
Rotterdam police, working with the State Police, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Schenectady County District Attorney's office kept the house under round-the-clock surveillance for three weeks until the arrests were made April 22.
The three defendants, who remain at the county jail, face one count of first- and two counts of third-degree arson.
Police have said additional arrests could be made in connection with the use of explosives on other occasions.

ROTTERDAM — A fourth person faces arson charges in a vandalism spree in which explosives were used to blow up the property of a woman's boyfriend, according to Assistant District Attorney John Healy.
Healy said Tuesday that Michael Garry, 31, was charged Monday in Rotterdam Town Court with third-degree felony arson and misdemeanor criminal mischief for allegedly placing an explosive device that shattered the windshield on the victim's pickup truck on March 11.
Garry was already behind bars on an unrelated drug charge, Healy said.
The victim's East Claremont Avenue home was allegedly targeted more than a dozen times in March because Lawrence Ahrens was upset he was dating Ahrens' former girlfriend, said police and prosecutors.

SCHENECTADY — A Rotterdam man and his girlfriend pleaded not guilty during separate arraignments for their alleged role in a vandalism spree in which explosives were used to blow up the property of a woman's boyfriend in March.
Michael Chambers, 33, appeared Monday before Visiting Schenectady County Judge Richard Giardino, after which his girlfriend, Amy Brzoza, 31, made an appearance. Chambers was sent back to jail on $1 million bond. Brzoza is being held on $250,000 bond.

Assessing bond can be attributed to the following: Risk of flight(based on ties to the community; property ownership, severity of the crime) and risk of re-offense(based on prior criminal record). Someone with a clean record and who owns a home will ALWAYS have a lower bail than someone with a long rap sheet and who rents an apartment. It's common sense.
