Millions of acres of unused lands are being held by the state on our behalf. The should be selling these lands and balancing the budget. The first million acres wouldn't put a dent in the public lands and even at $1,000 per acre that would bring in a "Billion Dollars." I drive along the Thruway and the Northway, and wonder why all the wilderness is just sitting there, when people would love some vacation property or a place outside the cities. Who the hell are they saving it for? The state really needs the money. Private citizens often are forced to sell off properties to meet their debts. The state has the assets to not be underfunded. They just need to cut loose of some of it.

Lets sell off the public land... why not the entire Adirondacks. ~ We could melt down the Statue of Libertytoo...It's made of copper... and the price of copper is high on the scrap market. ~There's the Grand Canyon... I bet some rich developer would buy it and make it into his personal play ground. ~We could get rid of the Ronald Reagan International Airport in DC... Like the Pepsi center... the airport naming rights could be sold off to some wealthy Corporation... "The Halliburton International Airport". ~While we're at it, the White House is just a big waste of prime DC land... it could be torn down and a Marriott or a Hilton built there.
Pretty soon, America as we know it would be gone... and the Libertarians would be happy with what they've done.

Sell off land in NYS?? LOL Where are the buyers? This state is losing population faster than fashion models change clothes.
Fairly soon all that will be left will be stock brokers, lawyers, Doctors, people that work for the government and people that work for companies that support people who work for the government. If I didn't have family here, I would have left this state years ago.

I've lived in a few places in this country, and have found none that I like as much as this part of NY state. The Adirondacks... most Upstaters take them for granted. Boating, fishing, hiking, skiing... I wouldn't trade the Adirondacks for any where else in the USA. So if you don't appreciate NY's mountains, lakes & rivers, leave them for those of us who do. I thank the foresight of our forefathers who put that land in Forever Wild Trust for all to enjoy.

See, this is the reaction that you get from the communist party to anything reasonable as to slight changes in the failing ways that have brought us to the fiscal brink. While the government grows its market share at the expense of everything else, then wonders why it is running out of revenues (they really aren't since they know EXACTLY what they are doing) any attempt to change direction even by one tenth of one percent is met with acrimonious threats and violent hyperbole from the radical liars on the left that control government/media.

I wish I could, believe me..But at 50, it would be stupid to try to restart my career somewhere else, not to mention the family angle. NYS has a lot going for it, recreational wise, but you sure pay for it in taxes. When I retire, I'll most likely move out of NYS to a state that doesn't take as much of what I have earned. I'll come back to visit and take comfort in knowing I'm not supporting the government waste, Cadillac welfare system and other largess.

Less than one percent of the NYS lands have even had a person ever standing on them. I'm not saying sell every inch of the state. I'm suggesting selling off 10 percent of the state lands and taking some of the burden off of the taxpayers. 10 percent would be billions. You could own your own fishing/hunting camp instead of the government providing it for you while taxing you to death for it.
And yes, the Libertarians would be happy to see a state budget that the taxpayers get a break on for a change.

Much of the Adirondacks used to be privately owned. (See the Great Camps). The wealthy built mansions in the woods, some complete with bowling alley, and they would entertain their guests on their private land. Many wanted to share that land with the general public, and donated it to NY State to be used by all our residents, not just the wealthy.

NY State owns at least two ski areas... they MAKE MONEY FOR THE STATE... The opposite of welfare.
And... the state doesn't own any land for me? That land is state land, that it holds in trust for all New Yorkers.
Some people when they see a forest only see dollars... I pity them. I'm glad that our state land is protected from speculators and developers who would cash in and destroy OUR LAND.
