I did some research, and apparently Pricechopper by policy does not use this filler.  Awesome.  I knew i was  overpaying for my food for a reason!

I suspect the pink slime makes ground beef more "sticky", i.e., to make burgers keep their shape on the grill.
One of the times I specifically remember that is when I bought the 10lb box of hamburg patties at BJ's for a graduation party and tried to use the patties I had left in few recipe's. I did it once and threw the rest away when it got too old to use it as Burgers.
I get my "non-party" meat at Sals, I don't think they use pink slime.

I always tell my wife we should try Sal's.  I personally am very fond of Fred the Butcher in Menands.

What they did is make it legal to cook down the scraps, blast it with ammonia (to kill bacteria) , and put in into the mixture and not label it as anything other then ground beef.   IT's more to fill it out with biproduct to make them money.
