By Patrick Werr and Tom Perry CAIRO | Thu Jan 26, 2012 5:29pm EST (Reuters) - Six Americans working for publicly funded U.S. organizations promoting democracy in Egypt have been barred from leaving the country, provoking angry demands in Washington that Cairo's new military rulers stop "endangering American lives".
Among those hit by travel bans - one of those targeted called it "de facto detention" - is a son of U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, as well as other foreign staffers of the International Republican Institute and National Democratic Institute, officials at the two organizations said.
Oh no!!! Americans detained by the Egyptian government...How dare they!!! Is the Arab Spring over? What is going on in that country? They need rule of law like us in America. A government can't just go around detaining people without formally charging them with a crime...Right? Thank God America is the land of the free and home of the brave and our government respects civil liberties and would NEVER detain a person(citizen or foreign national) without getting a warrant from the judicial branch to make sure the state had probable cause for detainment.
Thank goodness we have our freedom here in the good ole U.S. of A., and aren't subjected to arbitrary detainment by our military. It is good that our state department can talk to the Egyptian government from a moral high ground.
Lets hope Egypt doesn't have a Lindsey Graham in their government.
