On New Year’s Eve, a 4.0 magnitude earthquake hit northeastern Ohio, the second quake to strike the region in a week. Saturday’s quake, which occurred in an area not typically known for this type of natural disaster, is being traced back to fluid injection wells at a Youngstown fracking site.
According to the Akron Beacon Journal, “the quake was the 11th over the last eight months in Mahoning County, all within two miles of the injection wells.”
Fracking wells have been linked to earthquakes in Arkansas, West Virginia, Colorado and Texas. Two of the Ohio injection wells in question are now being shut down.

If the Hover Dam were built today, it would be a different situation. Although dangerous work, with OSHA requirements, the loss of life in a project this size would be eliminated or minimized.

For Box, if he was blogging back then, he would have opposed building the Hoover Dam since there were no Federal Safety Regulations in place, and it wouldn't have been worth the risk to build a dam that produced hydroelectric power for 3 states.

We (in Schenectady County) live along and between and amidst a number of geological fault lines -- we may not have many "recorded" 3.0 or greater earthquakes .. but we small earthquakes are actually pretty common and mid-sized to major quakes are possible.

For testing purposes, the well was injected with approximately 568,000 gallons of city water prior to injecting any waste. However, when the Basin F liquids were actually introduced, the process required more time than anticipated to complete because of the impermeability of the rock. The end result was approximately 165 million gallons of Basin F liquid waste being injected into the well during the period from 1962 through 1966. The injected fluids had very little potential for reaching the surface or useable groundwater supply since the injection point had 11,900 feet of rock above it and was sealed at the opening. The Army discontinued use of the well in Feb. 1966 because of the possibility that the fluid injection was triggering earthquakes in the area. The well remained unused for nearly 20 years.
