Dirty truth about 'Occupy' camps: Health officials crack down on sanitation, health hazards
By CHRISTINA HOAG
Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- With thousands of Occupy Wall Street demonstrators roughing it in parks for up to six weeks, garbage, human waste and hygiene are becoming a growing worry in public encampments nationwide.
Poor food storage exacerbated a rat infestation in Oakland. Inspectors found open human waste in Philadelphia. Hypothermia cases developed in Denver after a snowstorm hit.
Disease is the chief concern with so many people living in close proximity without proper sanitation.
"Any time you have a large number of people in an event like this, there's potential for illness to spread rapidly," said Angelo Bellomo, director of environmental health for Los Angeles County. "Conditions can change within an hour or two."
Poor food storage, along with public urination and defecation, led Oakland police to dislodge 200 protesters from a plaza outside City Hall before dawn Tuesday.
In Philadelphia, sanitary conditions have worsened at the 350-tent Occupy Philly camp, said city managing director Richard Negrin. The camp has four portable toilets that have not been cleaned or emptied regularly.
Health officials, who conduct daily inspections of Los Angeles' camp, have directed organizers to dispose of wastewater from portable showers into drains rather than the ground, and to increase the number of portable toilets, have them emptied twice a day and provide water jugs for hand-washing...................>>>>.......................>>>>............................http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/s.....amp;TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

really....? really.....this is the story......and the folks doing this cant be responsible for their own damn sickness if they get sick......holy crap.......like the earth will stop on it's axis if a bunch of protesters get the flu or the runs......

find another story and STOP treating folks as if they are china dolls........no wonder we have an "I deserve it, give it to me, it's my right" problem.......

Occupy L.A.: 30 tons of debris left behind at City Hall tent city
November 30, 2011 |  4:32 pm

Sanitation officials said Wednesday that they expect to haul away 30 tons of debris from the Occupy L.A. encampment –- everything from clothing to heaps of garbage to oddball curiosities left behind by the protesters who lived at the City Hall tent city for two months.

Andrea Alarcon, president of the city Public Works board, said workers already have removed 25 tons of belongings from the City Hall park, all of it heading straight to a landfill.

Sanitation crews also have vacuumed up about 3,000 gallons of water that had washed into a catch basin in recent days and are testing it for hazardous materials, she said.

The sheer volume of personal belongings left behind after the early morning Los Angeles Police Department raid has astonished city workers: books and CDs, luggage and boom boxes, mattresses and dining chairs, cellphones, electric razors, a small red guitar with its neck snapped –- all surrounded by dozens of collapsed and empty tents.

A steady flow of people stopped by the park Wednesday to take photos and video and watch workers in white hazmat suits rake trash into neat piles.........................>>>>......................>>>>....................http://latimesblogs.latimes.co.....-hall-tent-city.html

As I've posted before... The Occupy movement is successful in changing the conversation from "TeaBaggin Tax Breaks for
all Occasions"..
To
"Banks & Corporations running our government."

Just look at how many threads have Occupy as their subject, and how many Conservatives dedicate half of their posts to
"Occupy and the 99%."  If nothing else, that is a major success.

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral
philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

I think BOTH the  "teabaggers" and the "fleabaggers" are a health hazard -- a hazard to the overall political health of our nation.

how do you think the banks and corporation got to running the government? their pen-pals get elected.....and in the lingo for Frank Barney the 'administration' of our government is the voter...
so we have arrived at this place in history because of generational choices....

the hippies decided to have the banks 'work for them"(let your money work for you slogan) and elected their fellow yuppies......then their offspring 'just' followed the next slogan "just do it"

the hippies/yuppies thought they were making a peoples commune when all they did was keep it in their own tee-pee......all the while keeping the feel good actions of "I donate, look at me" so
they didn't feel bad....not to mention keeping the masses thinking "don't ever grow up and don't ever get old".....your college days are the best days of your life etc etc.......

Mayor Calls For Budget Cuts To Offset Millions In Occupy LA Costs
December 21, 2011 1:10 AM

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — The City of Los Angeles reportedly faces millions of dollars in expenses brought about by the Occupy LA movement.

City agencies have been ordered to calculate what was spent on the Occupy LA protests.

Repairs to City Hall’s lawn where the Occupy group set up camp on Oct. 1 will require an estimated $400,000. The police action to clear out the encampment on Nov. 30 cost more than $700,000.

Additional expenses are attributed to hauling away debris from the camp, and cleaning up graffiti that defaced City Hall marble walls and trees.

Mayor Villaraigosa says more budget cuts will be necessary to offset the costs.
