Tax debt deals ready as New York state seeks revenues
State expands relief plans, discounts for delinquents to collect more revenue

ALBANY -- Help is on the way for New Yorkers who owe state taxes but can't pay.

The state Department of Taxation and Finance has broadened the scope of its Offer in Compromise program, which sets up discounts and payment schedules to help people catch up.

"The global economic downturn has made it more important than ever for government to provide more flexible payment options," Tax Commissioner Thomas Mattox said.

The change should help hard-pressed people who owe back taxes, and it could reduce the state's mammoth backlog in unpaid taxes, which by some estimates could top $4 billion.

The Offer in Compromise program has long been available to people who have declared bankruptcy or who were deemed insolvent.
