Erie Canal likely shut until spring
Flooding woes mean it's unlikely to reopen before winter shutdown

AMSTERDAM -- Battered by floodwaters, the Erie Canal is unlikely to reopen this autumn before it shuts down for the winter in November.

"It's not going to happen. Looking at the damage, I'm pretty sure it's not going to open this year," said Rob Goldman, owner of NYS Marine Highway, a shipping company that frequents the canal system. "The storms were catastrophic."

The canal is indefinitely closed between Waterford and Utica. Heavy rains from tropical storms Irene and Lee caused flooding at five locks, from Vischer Ferry in Clifton Park to just west of Amsterdam, when the rising waters ripped open dams and reshaped the shoreline.

Touring damaged Lock 11 in Amsterdam on Monday, Canal Corp. Director Brian U. Stratton and his deputy, John Callaghan, showed U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer where floodwaters knocked out vertical steel support beams in the middle of the dam -- which are designed to pop out like ski bindings, preserving the larger structure. In many places, water jumped the river's banks and "scoured" new channels around the concrete locks.

"They're now in the middle of the river," said Callaghan, noting waters haven't receded at locks 9 and 10, just east.

"We have to move the locks back?" Schumer asked.

Spring? Of which year?

You know what this means, that throughout the fall, there will be a push to raise tolls on the Thruway again to help to raise money to rebuild the canal system that is not self-sustaining in it's good days.

I am confident that the Governor and his team, including the Honorable Mayor Stratton will get the canal up and running and all of this will be forgotten, except by the Nattering Naybobs of Negativity who persist to whine about their dirty diapers.

This is probably the first time BS has seen that lock.

First of all --- I am NOT GG or SB --- so you are fool if you insist on saying that I am.

Second --- I believe the damage is significant but I trust that the Canal Corp will get it fixed and reopened in time for the 2012 season.

I can assure the nayboobs that I have visited those locks and other locks -- and others along the Mohawk River, the Utica to Buffalo sections, Hudson-Champlain and Oswego sections of the canal system .. a number of times over the years.  

New York's canal history has always been an interest of mine --- and the locks are also pleasant places to go fishing or to picnic.
