ROTTERDAM JUNCTION — Residents of the western part of Schenectady County started to return to their homes Tuesday, a day after some of the worst flooding in decades forced hundreds to flee.

Rotterdam Supervisor Frank Del Gallo said local fire and police officials, along with representatives from several state agencies, are allowing people to return to homes that are fit for habitation.

“We are pumping out cellars and houses and inspecting them and making sure they are safe,” Del Gallo said. “They are doing a good job.”

He said some homes — he was unable to provide a number — were badly damaged by the flooding, and that people will not be able to return to them.

Flooding also damaged the bridge over Route 103, and the state has closed it until repairs are completed, Del Gallo said.

Route 5S, which was closed Monday and most of Tuesday, reopened Tuesday night. Campbell Road remains closed because floodwaters remain in the area.

Residents of Long Pond Village on Campbell Road are being allowed to return following inspections of their apartments, Del Gallo said...................................>>>>........................................>>>>..................................http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2011/aug/31/0831_junction/
