Circumcision Ban Challenges Freedom of Religion and Creates Controversy
As this story continues to unfold, I interviewed Rabbi Shalom Denbo, an educational rabbi who is the director of the Jerusalem Road Trips, and a certified “mohel”. He has dedicated his life to teaching Jewish heritage. He teaches Jewish traditions to members of Alpha Epsilon Pi, an international fraternity with several chapters here in Los Angeles including UCLA. “The ban on Bris Milah is absurd because the claim that it is anything similar to genital mutilation is nonsense. It does not inhibit physical pleasure and cannot be compared to female mutilation. What they are fighting is a cultural value system that is thousands of years old. It is naïve to say that we cannot do this to the child because he cannot decide. We as parents make decisions for our children.
