Am I missing something, or doesn't the Wisconsin state legislator's have to vote to end collective bargaining?  Unless the Governor of Wisconsin has the power of a king.  Does't the citizens of Wisconsin have the right to the pass laws they want to be governed by?  Where are the Democrats in this democratic process?  They can vote to oppose it. Oh yeah...IThey're in LLINOIS!

If this proposed legislation is SO UNPOPULAR, then it is safe to say the Republicans will lose their majority come next election.

BTW, the end to collective bargaining is for PENSION AND INSURANCE, not wages.

The governor wants to make Wisconsin a right to work state to attract businesses to come back to his state and create jobs in the state. A teacher in Wisconsin pays $700 per year in union dues as a teacher and her union used her dues to attack her husband who was running for the legislature as a Rep. By doing what the governor wants to do the people in the state wouldn't have to join a union, wouldn't have to pay union dues unless they want to, and could only bargain for wages not benefits. The legislation is only unpopular with the unions not the people who have to pay for the union members lucrative salaries and benefits.

The Wisconsin Issue has little to do with state finance, and lots to do with Union Busting.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXdBEXls1GU&feature=player_embedded

I would have to disagree with you on this. The fact that it has little to do with finances would take someone who just doesn't want to admit it to be brought out.  The fact is that the unions are the reason that running the government is so expensive. If they didn't have the unions, then it would be much less expensive to run the government, hence helping with the finances.  I guess you could say that they go hand in hand.  The fact that the finances are running out of control in almost any municipality has to do, at least in part,  with strongarm unions.  This can be seen in how much it costs to run the Schenectady and Rotterdam Police, also.

Two-Thirds of Wisconsin Public-School 8th Graders Can’t Read Proficiently—Despite Highest Per Pupil Spending in Midwest

By Terence P. Jeffrey

(CNSNews.com) - Two-thirds of the eighth graders in Wisconsin public schools cannot read proficiently according to the U.S. Department of Education, despite the fact that Wisconsin spends more per pupil in its public schools than any other state in the Midwest.

In the National Assessment of Educational Progress tests administered by the U.S. Department of Education in 2009—the latest year available—only 32 percent of Wisconsin public-school eighth graders earned a “proficient” rating while another 2 percent earned an “advanced” rating. The other 66 percent of Wisconsin public-school eighth graders earned ratings below “proficient,” including 44 percent who earned a rating of “basic” and 22 percent who earned a rating of “below basic.”

The test also showed that the reading abilities of Wisconsin public-school eighth graders had not improved at all between 1998 and 2009 despite a significant inflation-adjusted increase in the amount of money Wisconsin public schools spent per pupil each year.

Elections have consequences...

Quoted Text
In 2008, when Barack Obama handily won Wisconsin by 14 points, giddy Democrats declared that the historically progressive state had finally gone solidly blue.

Not so fast...

Deep concerns over the economy appeared to drive the sentiment against Democrats in Wisconsin. Exit polls revealed that 4 in 10 voters said their own family’s financial situation had worsened in the last two years. http://elections.nytimes.com/2010/results/wisconsin

The public strongly opposes(61%)laws taking away the collective bargaining power of public employee unions as a way to ease state financial troubles, according to a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll.

Wisconsin's governor is going too far ---    I agree that the state workers should pay for part of their retirement and health insurance ...  and, in fact, the unions are willing to negotiate on that point.    But the Governor wants to take away their collective bargaining rights and THAT is the point neither  the union or I could ever go along with.

They were only going to be stripped if they didn't come to the table and agree to removing FUTURE SH!T WE CANT AFFORD OR PREDICT

Collective Bargaining Expensive???

    NOPE!

Eliminating collective bargaining won't reduce state deficits.

States with no collective bargaining rights for any public employees saw an average budget shortfall of 24.8% in 2010.

States (including DC) with collective bargaining for all public employees had an average budget shortfall of 24.1%.

This issue isn't about State Budgets, it's about CONSERVATIVE UNION BUSTING.

Where are the Wisconsin Democrats then?  If 61% strongly oppose then it is an easy no vote, and they begin planning for the next election running on reinstating collective bargaining.

Maybe here is why the Democrats aren't coming back to Madison.  Even if the undecided spit 50/50 that's 55% that side with the governor.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 48% of Likely U.S. Voters agree more with the Republican governor in his dispute with union workers. Thirty-eight percent (38%) agree more with the unionized public employees, while 14% are undecided..http://www.rasmussenreports.co....._38_side_with_unions

There is no way in hell that I would ever support denying ANY worker the right to collective bargaining -- public or private.
If the tea partiers come to Albany -- I will grab my pitch fork and be in the crowd fighting them back.

they can have collective bargaining all they want,,,,but..

1. pay your own damn dues to the gangsters that live in bigger homes than you
2. no FUTURE guarantees/COLAS/pensions/healthcare
3. you cant force legislation, ie:tenure, budgets, where tax dollars are spent to keep your job etc....
4. YOU'RE NOT A VICTIM, GET OVER IT. you agreed to be in a union/your choice

5. YOU MUST EVOLVE....psst,,,,did anyone tell ya'll it's not 1950 anymore?????

How about eliminating the clause in their contract that says you can't fire a tenured teacher so we can eliminate having to pay for 6,000 teachers in NYC that can no longer teach due to criminal issues.
