A welcome text-ban retreat

We could sympathize — but only a little — with Rotterdam Supervisor Frank Del Gallo’s effort — wisely aborted after public outcry — to ban the use of cellphones, computers and other electronic communications toys at Town Board meetings.
Even when they’re being used silently, to send or read text-messages or other written communications, these gadgets can be distracting — not just to the people doing the sending and receiving, but those around them. Some of the people engaged in texting at Town Board meetings have themselves been board members, so it would be hard to blame their colleagues for being put off by the rudeness and inattention.
But it was also hard — in the context of the ongoing feud between Del Gallo and other Town Board members, as well as the supervisor’s autocratic tendencies — not to view this edict as just another effort on Del Gallo’s part to tweak his political adversaries.
There were First Amendment arguments against it as well. People sitting in the audience have a right to take notes electronically, to keep friends or neighbors who couldn’t attend the meeting informed by texting them; to provide public commentary, even the partisan kind, by blogging; or to make tape recordings.................>>>>..........................>>>>....................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r00902&AppName=1[/size]

Open Gov’t Committee too selective on Rotterdam issues

In reference to Gary P. Guido’s Feb. 18 letter [“Rotterdam’s majority undermining supervisor”], I’d like to say that it is about time someone stood up for Supervisor [Frank] Del Gallo. He is doing what he believes, and what I believe, is right and is not putting his political interests above the interests of the people he represents.
One action Supervisor Del Gallo has been criticized for is his request for attendees of Town Board meetings to abstain from cellphone use. The Department of State’s Committee on Open Government took a position on his request. For them to do so is challenging a town’s autonomy.
Supervisor Del Gallo was completely justified in requesting this because it is not appropriate. It distracts not only the person partaking in the call or text messaging from focusing on the task at hand, but also distracts those around them. Quite simply, it is immature, impolite. It causes ringing, buzzing and/or various other distractions to those who actually want to hear, much less participate in the meeting.
An argument was made that this is 2011 and we should “get with the times.” I have no problem with cellphone use when I am on my own time. Do universities, businesses tolerate cellphone use during classes and meetings? Not those that I am familiar with. Manners are still a vital part of any civilized society.
I am curious as to why the Committee on Open Government would be more interested in Supervisor Del Gallo’s innocuous request than the fact that Del Gallo apparently did not know that three council members met with lawyers from a new, very expensive law fi rm. These lawyers were at the same meeting during which Del Gallo requested refraining from cellphone usage. It is illegal for any town board member or members to have a quorum without not only including all board members, but issuing public notice.
Now I do not know for sure that this is what happened, but it sure appeared that way to me since Supervisor Del Gallo didn’t know who the lawyers were. If I were on the Committee on Open Government, this would concern me much more than the request regarding cellphone usage. Just a little too cozy, don’t you think?
If anyone truly believes that Frank Del Gallo is anything other than a man with great integrity, they should talk to his friends and neighbors. So many people encouraged and supported his campaign because of his integrity, honor, loyalty and honesty. He may still be learning how to be a politician, but he has always known how to be a good person who does what he says and says what he means. This is certainly not so easy to find in today’s political arena.

I agree!!!  When are the Republicans going to run J. Denny again?  He can straighten this mess out.   13 years of the school teacher was GREAT for Rotterdam.

Rotterdam doesn't necessarily need an educated person, but an ethical person with integrity.  Unfortunately, as it stands right now, those people are suppressed by political parties.  Principles are a liability when interviewing for party endorsement.  Win at all cost!!

Perhaps professional doesn't mean what you think it does? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professional
