It's a definate improvement over the old crappy buildings...but they could have done something more with the architecture.  It looks like a Ponderosa steak house.  Just think they could have done more to the appearance so it's not so bland.  BUT, much improved over what was there for many years.

Point taken....however, all of these improvements were at the cost to the taxpayers. And as 'improved' as it may look, most of these 'improvements' do NOT pay taxes. The overburdened taxpayers propped up these businesses and the overburdened taxpayers are paying the businesses property taxes. These 'improvements' are TAX EXEMPT!

Some of these 'improvements' were just shifted from one end of the county to the other. Net gain = ZERO!

And while these so called improvements are popping up here and there, at the taxpayer's expense, there are a continued and ever expanding line at the dss and unemployment building. Crime is on the rise. Shooters are still on the loose. The county is the highest taxed in the state and the 19th highest in the country. People are walking away from their homes because they can no longer afford their taxes! The school district is among one of the worst!

Looks are very deceiving!

I agree with Tippy I am a bit disapointed at the longevity of construction for the new recovery room.  Next time perhaps someone from Metroplex should make sure the building should be built of a construction type that will last or easily transformed into something else as it will always have to be a resturant.

The trend in construction is to the type of building that is being built to house the Recovery Room and the
bank.   I don't believe that the town can single-handedly buck the national trend in construction.
The building is pretty nice looking - a great improvement over what stood there before.

Finally --- While I hope that the Recovery Room and Berkshire Bank will be successful businesses for many
years to come, there is nothing that says that it has to remain a restaurant and a bank always.

Says who...show me the proof that this is the trend, becuase all the new construction in the Syracuse area (where I live) DOES NOT look like this. I don't questions the construction methods, as I did not see it in the construction phases to make that judgement.  But from an architectural point, this building is blah and not following the trend of new construction for restaurants.  I'll send you pics when I return home if you like to show you I am able to support my statements......your turn!

And in syracuse, are the taxpayers paying for businesses to build and relocate and then these same businesses are allowed to be tax exempt for at least a decade?

The Belvedere is up for sale. What could that be used for?

And rest assure jboxer, this bank and gin mill is setting up business ONLY because of BBL's affiliation with the metroplex. Rotterdam taxpayers already gave BBL $120K to seal this 'private deal'. Rotterdamians still don't know what the taxbenefit will be for BBL. Will they be exempt??????

The bank and restaurant were built using panelized construction techniques.  That is a growing trend in
both residential and commercial construction.   One only has to turn on the tv or look at the web or look
at actually construction projects being built to see that my statements are true.

READ MY TEXT AGAIN....I do not claim any knowledge of the construction.....I am speaking about the finished product design!

Bumble, yes, taxpayers are indeed footing the bill for these types of development.  And, I know this will pi$$ you off, but all NYS taxpayers funded the Carousel Mall expansion that has been stalled for years and took years to get off the ground.

DVR you are correct (and I can speak on this matter as I am a licensed Architect) the trend is wood panelized construction due to first cost and is allowed for this construction type as long as it meets other NYS building code requirements.  What I was attempting to state is that since financial incentives were given to this buisness to have it constructed someone should have had a say in it to make sure the building has some future value to the people of Rotterdam, if the recovery room does not work out.  This building is a first cost building not a building built for the best intrests of future potential users.

I was speaking to the construction only.   As for the design, I would agree that it is not an award winner but
then again -- very few buildings in the Capital District would fit that category.
Of course, since design or looks can be such a personal thing --- we can spend years debating this point.
I would personally prefer to see all buildings in the town have a northern european gothic or norman style
of design ---- stone walls ... narrow windows  .. towers  ....

My only objection to the Recovery Room is that the design looks like it was just thrown together to get it built as cheaply and as fast as possible.
