Villa Italia would have done just as well if they were located on Hamilton HIll or MP. Petta's still remains open and that is located in 'the gut'. When a business has a history of offering a superior service or product.....the people will come.

What the city has done was actually 'segregate' its population by concentrating on 2 blocks of the city. If they were truly concerned with the 'entire' city.....These 'relocated' business would have been placed strategically though out the city.

But instead, they lured these businesses with taxpayer's money and with lucrative tax breaks in to only one area of the city, which in turn all about destroyed the surrounding neighborhoods economically.

I agree with you Bumble.  When I was a child, the Mont Pleasant neighborhood was one that my family would visit frequently.
There were several great bakeries.  With the shuttering of many businesses including the pharmacy, Marcella's, and the bakeries
I now have no reason to visit the area.  The neighborhood has declined to the point that I prefer not to drive through it.

For baked goods, I visit Bella Napoli (Latham), Mrs. London's (Saratoga Springs) and the Bread Basket (Saratoga Springs).  
I'll occasionally go to Villa Italia if I'm in the area.  Their product is excellent.  Prices are lofty.

The North Jay Street and Barrett Street areas offered great Italian restaurants like Mother Ferro's, Luigi's, and Mama Bianchi's.
Not much left to visit in that area other than Perreca's bakery.

Downtown Schenectady has become the sand box for Mr. Morris! He is leading that pack. And how much taxpayer's money has Proctors received in total??

And how much is his taxpaid salary?   And where does he live? NOT IN THE CITY!

The FACT is that Villa Italia wanted to expand -- couldn't do it at the Hamburg St location and had their
plan to expand at Helderberg Ave and Curry Rd thwarted -- so then they were looking OUTSIDE Schenectady
County but a deal was put together that kept them IN the county by bringing them to Broadway.

The FACT is that Villa Italia and a number of businesses are now IN downtown Schenectady and are
doing quite well  -- the dynamic of office workers  (MVP, DOT, Lottery and others) and patrons coming
to Proctors and patrons coming to the various shops creates a synergy that is revitalizing the once
NEAR DEATH downtown.    Gradually this dynamic synergy is being spread outward -- College Park and
Little Italy and up Broadway towards I-890 .. and soon will spread down lower State St and all along the
Erie Corridor from the old ALCO to the gates of GE.

Progress is being made .. slowly but surely ... and the only folks who object to the progress are the
Nattering Nayboobs of Negativity who have NEVER done more in life than whine, complain and criticize.

The Schenectady Miracle.

The FACT that these businesses were looking to move their businesses out of Schenectady County is the reality.  The FACT the County taxpayers are fleeced to keep WEALTHY business people WEALTHY and their properties exempt from paying property taxes is a crime - NOT progress!

Lets exempt residential property in the troubled Schenectady neighborhoods, and disproportionately shift the burden to business.  Maybe with the extra money, homeowners will renovate and update their properties while the businesses pay for fire, police, roads, and sewer services.

and a perdiction for the future - what are the chosen zones of growth and what are the expected costs

i doubt there is no documented plan

i have heard stories of sucessful business looking for low interest loans being turned away and now doing much better on their own paying 100% cash to grow

They pushed him out of Jamestown, NY from his previous job after racking up a ton of debt and financial trouble. A friend of mine who lives out there says they are still paying for it. The gazette should do a story on this, oh I forgot they are supporting taking the Key Bank off the tax rolls and letting the city residents pay the taxes for another millionaire caterer!
