Changes to Central State Street don’t make sense

    The recent narrowing of Central State Street in Schenectady to only one lane in either direction seems to fall within the predictable parameters of the lack of vision revealed by city leaders and planners. It also borders on plain old lack of common sense and the usual stupidity portrayed by the city.
    People will argue that the creation of a center turning lane will enhance safety, and some might even like the pretty arrows and stripes that beautify the pavement where cars used to drive. But to me, this is just the latest in the city’s own funeral procession.

They don't want you to drive. They think Central State is another Champs Elysee or they would have opened a Walgreen's on Brandywine by now. Ride your bike on the widened sidewalk and shut up. This is the same crap they want to do to Erie Blvd. Same failed idiotic plans over and over.

      The current "leaders" in City Hall are all nuts. The result of years of imploded opposition and clueless one party rule. Take another look at the dozens of empty business on both sides of State. They seriously want to build more  retail at ALCO? Beyond mere stupidity more like willful neglect.

They dont want cars......they want Lark Street........

yeah, the turd world drivers that fill the city don't get, understand, or don't give an 'F' about you if you are behind them, so they don't USE the turn lanes! More licenses for criminal intruders (illegal aliens.)

I think you will find that the State Department of Transportation had more to say about the actual
design of the road project than did the city government.

So again passing blame to another......you are admitting it was poor planning and a traffic disaster AND a a waste of taxpayer's dollars???

I agree - came down State from Mohawk Commons this morning - a very bizzare drive. People in the center turn lane, face to face, trying to turn in opposite directions.  While it probably helps drivers trying to make turns during the busy times (rare), it just doesn't make sense to do it for such a long stretch of road.  Even the crosswalks seem odd.

But then again, we're creatures of habit, we don't necessarily adopt easily to change.  Maybe it'll grow on us after time.

No blame -- just stating the fact of who planned the Route 5 improvements .. since I believe it
is a good and necessary project.

Apparently the naysayers in here are still reeling from when they took the horse and buggies
off of State Street and replaced them with those newfangled "horseless carriages".

Oh come on, if it was good and necessary, then why didn't they change all of Route 5 into one lane in each direction???   This is something the current city, county, and metroplex wanted.....to "slow" traffic because they think this will make people will stop in the city and shop.  Drive slower and maybe someone will look out their window and say "Oh, look at that place, I think I want to stop there (and shop).  But have you ever seen the traffic bottlenecks downtown?   Outrageous.  it's absolutely terrible when you are driving, say, eastbound and you are stuck under the bridge because the light at Clinton St is red and the traffic is backed up all that way because all traffic is forced into one lane.  

Then, what's worse is when the eastbound lane is bumper to bumper and the westbound lane is bumper to bumper and an emergency vehicle is coming.  YIKES

What is really becomming an absolute necessity now is to build a road, beginning at the intersection of Rte 5 and Balltown, that will go directly to I-890.  I mean REALLY who the heck wants to be slowed down on Rt 5 to get to the Crosstown iun order to get to 890?  What, take a right turn and drive all the way down to Rt 7 in order to back track to get to 890?  Talk about the city/county/plex having people make a choice between wasting gas or wasting gas (drive all the way down to Rt 7 to back track vs stop and go, stop and go, stop and go, unable to pass that old fart sunday driver during rush hour traffic)

Now, can you imagine that new "rapid" bus?   It's not going to be rapid at all?  It's going to be going just as slow as all the cars in front of it.

Think, people think.  Think of a road like the Thruway, Northway and other roads like that that have two lanes.  What happens when the state is doing some roadwork, or there is an accident, or whatever, and one lane is closed?   What happens?   What happens?   What happens?   What happens?   It takes you LONGER to get to your desiintation.  What happens when one lane in each direction is removed in the city of Schenectady....on the most heavily travelled road?  It will take you LONGER to get to your desination.  

Do you have lots of time in your life to lolligag around on State St?

Why is it "necessary" to create traffic jams and without a way out?
Why is the rest of Route 5---outside of Schenectady city---keeping traffic flowing freely?

Exactly MC!! Again.....poor planning. these dimwits don't have a clue! If it's different they'll try it....even if it's wrong! Kind of like pissing in the wind!

Big design fees for big donors. Big constructions costs for big donors.

This is the same crap they pulled on Lower State. It's called "traffic calming". They want you to walk, bike or use the horrible CDTA buses (which is also in free fall). Mayor SOS wants to permanently remove customers and slow traffic to a crawl. Now traffic is backed for blocks. People are furious over these "improvements". Stop narrowing major roads.

     Marv Cermak has a great story about how mad business owners are. The few that are left. The blame goes to the Mayor and rubber stamp all DEM City Council who actually want to do the same thing on Erie Blvd. The same failed, stunad plans over and over.
