Another accident today (about 3:30) with a child that ran out in front of an ice cream truck with his frozen desert - and got hit by a passing car.
RPD and REMS were on the scene almost immediately - fortunately the boy was ok - just bruised and did not require a trip to the hospital (treated by EMS).
Will this be another nail in the coffin of Mr. Ding-A-Ling?
Mr. Ding a ling should have a stop sign just like school buses and the cars passing should be warned.....
no different than using cell phone.....PAY ATTENTION......PEDESTRIANS HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY....regardless of a 'ding a ling'.........it could have been a kid crossing after talking to grandma/pa......

Do kids have parents anymore??????? I mean really!!!

Society's laws and regulations raise our kids. Don't get caught letting your child ride their bike without a helmet. You'll be ticketed and may be visited by CPS to make sure you are fit.
We can't burden the parent with living with the guilt of letting their child run into the streets. It's the street and the ice cream trucks fault. Or the fault of the 99.9% of people that enjoy the ice cream truck and supervise their children when it's around. Let's ban the ice cream truck and the service it provides to the people in the town that enjoy it responsibly. Then make them feel guilty for wanting the ice cream truck by marching out the unfortunate child that was injured.
I respectfully disagree. A 4 year old doesn't have the dexterity to play near the road, let alone crossing it. Thousands of parents and children responsibly enjoyed the service of the ice cream truck. To paint the ice cream truck as child killing machine is illogical; drastically increasing the chances of an accident is a gross exaggeration.
But,,,it's definitely a vote getter. Don't we all feel safer knowing there's a ban on evil ice cream trucks in Rotterdam?
Good luck finding a politician to propose a lift on the ban. They would get crucified.
Well, i don't really want icecream trucks driving around, but that's because i don't want to have the "not now" argument with my little one every time, and i agre ewith bumble that it's more fun to go out, but that's my personal opinion. Now as far as what you are saying i don't know the facts, but having a 3 1/2 year old, and knowing lots of 4 -5 year olds, there is NO way a kid should be un supervised near a road, i'm sorry. I see where you get this opinion from and agree.
Heck my kid just ran across the parking lot (let go of my hand, i was right there!) at the little market on curry (gherlics or something) next to DD's. if someone turned into the parking lot it as she did... She never seen daddy so upset or stern with her, lol.
I don't spell check! Sorry... If you include "No offense" in a statement, chances are, your statement is offensive.
Does anybody know where we can get articles from the Gazette or whatever paper was around in '75 regarding this issue? Narrowing down of the month of the accident? Thought it would be interesting going back in the archives. Checking a few days of papers would be easier than checking months / the full year.

If you go to the gazette site there's an option for searching the archives (google news archive)...................I'll give it a try, but I'm not sure what search terms to use........................also, as it turns out not all issues are archived

I know the family of the victim personally... I believe it was between July and August, and I would bet on early to mid August.. I was 14. I was working on a boat that summer that was given to me for free and my dad and I had just returned from the boat shop to pick the motor that needed repair. My mom met us in the driveway and told us the news. I'm almost positive it was a Saturday as the girls mother did work and the accident happened as she was unloading a car full of groceries.

Look....in my time the ice cream truck was a big deal.....less cars on the road......more walkers that were use to the rules of walking....
no one had a car to go to and fro....so walking was the way..
Now, advance pl us ????? years.......you can't even walk across a street safely...drivers in a hurry..cell phone...texting.....not paying attention...
motoring well above the speed limit.....what do you expect...THEY DONT' EVEN SLOW DOWN FOR SCHOOL ZONE....
Not to ban the ice cream truck.....no....just stand on any street corner in this area....I dare you to try to cross and someone will stop and let you go....
New York drivers are the rudest and less courteous than ever......
PAY ATTENTION DRIVERS.....ADULTS MAY EVEN WANT AN ICE CREAM BAR.....
