SCHENECTADY, NY (September 15, 2004) — Schenectady County and City officials today joined with Metroplex to announce plans by the Mallozzi Family to invest over $2 million in a renovation of 226 Broadway in downtown Schenectady transforming a partially vacant building into a major commercial bakery and retail coffee/pastry shop in the fast growing Proctor's Entertainment District creating 40 new jobs downtown.  The current owner of 226 Broadway, Precision Industrial, will relocate to a new 7,500 square foot building that will be constructed on Erie Boulevard retaining 41 jobs and adding 10 new jobs in the City.

Villa Italia was thwarted by
the previous administration from relocating WITHIN Rotterdam ...

They wanted to relocate within the town -- and it was blocked by the then supervisor.

and just how much do both cost????

do you enjoy paying our police chief over 100K??? for what

i seem to remember how badly the county did compared to the town during last years storms, rotterdam has always been a well plowed haven in schenectady county

put the chips on the table

don't let schenectady happen here!

Tippy, I must agree with you on this.  The fact is, this past winter was the WORST the roads have been...and I live on a county road.  This put EVERYONE in town in danger, as I live on Princetown Road near the police station and ambulance garage.  There were days where it was dangerous to even drive on Princetown, which used to be one of the most taken care of roads.  I'm just glad that the town didn't have any lawsuits against it for non-response after some of the big storms we had last year.

Thank you for the information -- the Highway Department is still a huge part of town spending and       thus of our tax bill.

Through intergovernmental cooperation - you could save money - by eliminating duplication of positions .. particularly the supervisory ones.
For a county the size of Schenectady - 150,000 persons .. and the 2nd smallest in land area ... we
really don't need 7 highway departments, 6 police departments,  7 chief executives (Mayor/Supervisor) 7 clerks, 7 receivers of taxes, etc    (oops .. I didn't count the villages of Delanson and Scotia .. add 2  to some of the previous numbers).

DVR, you also forgot to add the 15 legislators paid to represent us at the county level, which could easily be replaced by a board of supervisors, the same way the show is run in Schoharie County.

I heard they were building a mosque there, with a 200 foot tall minaret.
The only hurdle left (so I'm told), is a permit to broadcast the "call to prayer" 6 times a day, over the loudspeakers that will be mounted on top, and heard for for 7 miles.

It's a pretty catchy tune and all, but I don't know about listening to it at 4AM.

Yes - they are all economic development  - Marcellas probably would have moved out of Schenectady
County altogether .. keeping them in the city is a big win for the County.
Villa Italia was thwarted by
the previous administration from relocating WITHIN Rotterdam .. so the fact that we were able to keep
them in the County instead of losing them to a neighboring county is also a big win for the County.
MVP brings hundreds of jobs to our downtown -- workers who spend money during their lunch time and
after work -- another big win for the County.
I always see good numbers of people going in and out of BowTie Cinema -- it attracts people down town
.. they spend money down town .. another big win for the County.
Proctor's is a jewel -- a nationally known venue -- it attracts people downtown -- they spend money in
Schenectady County -- it is a HUGE WIN for the County

So if I am misguided by thinking that keeping businesses WITHIN the County -- attracting NEW
business into the County -- and putting Schenectady County on the national map as an Arts/Entertainment venue -- than I am guilty as charged.   At least, I am not one of the ostriches who keep their head
in the sand (or someplace else) and wants NO development and then cries when their taxes go up.

IT'S NOT NEW MONEY........it's recycled in tight little circle jerk......trade will always happen....but the Atlas Shrugged concept stifles
the best use of people and resources....and both parties are involved as long as their pillows are fluffed........

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

actually .. I made a post on a different thread a week or so ago .. I do think the Board of Supervisors
approach would be better -- better still would be a unified city-county regional government

The GOP controlled the town board and .. you are forgetting about the Planning Commission and
Board of Appeals ... don't think that Buchanan and Tomassone did not try to influence those 2 groups

This is apparently 'hearsay'. Something rotterdam is familiar with! And this is the story from WHO???

The Mallz's are very well known and very well liked in rotterdam. They live here and do a great business here. If what you are saying is correct....and that is a big IF.....why didn't they go public with this information instead of falling into the political trap by making it a political issue? The town would have surely rallied around the Mallozzi's!

It just doesn't make sense!

So, what you're saying is that you want to have a county government that is pretty much run by the people that live in the city, right?

Well, the city of Schenectady already has a 40% rule on the County Legislature, and they are all in the majority (which currently runs at 86 2/3%) and they almost always vote as a solid block (unless someone's up for election and has to say that they voted against something (see the last special election that was held over in District 3)).

Not hearsay .. and yes .. it doesn't make sense that the GOP would slam the door on a family with a
good track record of starting and operating businesses.
