Offer of free
home evaluation
is a phone scam

Schenectady County offi cials are warning of a phone scam offering free in-home evaluations for fi re risk and compliance with carbon monoxide detectors.
Schenectady County Senior and Long Term Care Services has received numerous complaints in the past two days, said Joe McQueen, county spokesman.
The caller-id shows what looks like a legitimate Schenectady County phone number, but in fact is an old disconnected phone number for the Schenectady County Department of Senior and Long Term Care Services, he said.
McQueen said Schenectady County is not offering programs where a resident will receive a coldcall. He urged people to hang up on people mis-representing the county for this bogus program.
McQueen said people should contact their local fire departments about fire safety programs. He also said to contact Schenectady County’s Department of Senior and Long Term Care Services at 382-8481, extension, 1234, for information on programs it offers.

There are sooooo many handouts, it is difficult to distinguish between the scams and the handouts!

It sounds legit under the heading of Metrograft "green jobs". If they know the number why can't they trace it the new user?

How does a disconnected number show up on caller ID?
Unless it's an inside job, it doesn't make any sense.

Seems to me like it's an OLD disconnected number, that someone else now has, right?

And the phone company doesn't know who that new user is? Something fishy with this story.

Who says they can't? That wasn't in the article. Benny, you are usually dead-on with your criticisms and conspiracy theories...but when you cry wolf for no apparent reason, it diminishes your impact.

I didn't read that in the article...sounds like an assumption to me.  Who says the phone company doesn't know?

Of course the phone company knows. That was my point.

As usual, the "news story" was half baked and doesn't make any sense. Some still can't complete the dots.

Phone companies don't often give up numbers for free unless presented with a warrant, which is difficult to obtain since the law broken here is minor if any.  The phone company generally won't give the number to people who call in bomb threats to schools either, they like to charge a good amount if I recall.

As for a fire eval being a handout...how so? Someone looks at your place and says your good to go, not really a handout.  It's like calling when the fire department does the free checks of child safety seats a handout.

I think if there was actual monetary damage done, they would give up the number with a warrant. But they're not saying that any such thing has happened.

The hand outs I refer to are all of the senior benefits out there. There are many benefits from the office of the aging and heap. My mother's neighbor got a new furnace for free. And since she was eligible for heap, she automatically was eligible for food stamps and a lower rate on her phone bill.

So I can see where a senior might think these calls are is legit.

Wrong again Stein and I know first hand how to get a number from the phone company especially a bomb scare to a school. The police call the phone companies security department who call the people who have the information and after confirming that it really is the phone companies security wishing the information it is given to them at which point the phone company security calls the police department and gives them the information. The whole process takes about 15 min to 30 min depending on the time of day or night.

That's what I was told to, but I didn't know if it was true or not. Guess it was!

Hmm I had heard different.  PYX 106 even had a thing about it a few years back.  Hey if that's true then great, but why isn't that being done?  And why say wrong again?
