The 78-acre town-owned property in Rotterdam Junction has been proposed for a town park again.  It was announced in the 190th anniversary newspaper that was available at the last TB meeting.

It's long been supported and hoped for by members of the Rotterdam Conservation Advisory Council.  Rather than see the property lay dormant and used and abused by a small number of residents, it's our hope that it could be a passive recreational area for many to enjoy.  The Rotterdam Parks Commission is also supportive.

Frank DelGallo and Matt Martin have been working hard to get cooperation with SI Group, DEC and Andy Clemente. DEC will provide the technical and legal oversight of the aquifer protection and Andy Clemente's firm will build the park with no cost to the town taxpayers for construction.

We have discussed the long-term stewardship and policing issue with them and they understand very well how this property needs to be managed and not become a neighborhood nuisance.  I personally have proposed that the Rotterdam Junction satellite police station be moved to the entrance gate.

The next TB meeting (May 5) will be held in Rotterdam Junction.  Please come and bring your concerns, support for this park.  This is the time to bring up pros and cons.

the park article is on page 3 of 8

that would be a great turn around for the area!

I feel the state should reduce the speed limit on 5s from the thruway to the town of princetown to 35 mph to dealwith increased walking and bike traffic

and of course safety near the railroad - as usual

the upfront price appears to be very appealing

most of all it needs a "SONIC" - this is a serious comment

Sonic will never come here. Be real.

I am requesting a "SONIC"- with an ADK exterior - think long lake(ish)

who has the million plus to get it started???

or will we deny zoning to protect local business owners because the base million comes from out of town

the junction needs a good shot of something good
local jobs
increased traffic with a reason - "park and a sonic!"

why do we keep forgetting them?

Ask for anything you want with this town board and you'll get it. Whether it be right or wrong. Just giving them the bleeding heart story of how the 'children cry because they have no place to go and play'. And you can go on to say...'we parents work so hard all day that we would like a place to take our loving children for some family time'. And............'a SONIC would only enhance the family feel at the end of a hard day or on a weekend.' And......'it would promote family togetherness'.

I'm not saying this tic! I'm telling ya, if ya want it, just give them the bleeding heart story! It works every time with these libs!

ROTTERDAM
Pit-to-park idea resurfaces for Junction Commission sees 10-year effort to create park, link other sites
BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter

For more than three decades, town officials have mulled building a park on the former Bonded Concrete gravel pit in Rotterdam Junction.
The notion first came up when the Watervliet company offered to donate the 85-acre parcel if they were allowed to mine gravel from the site during the 1980s. When the mining effort failed and the land was donated to the town in the early 1990s, former Supervisor James Constantino envisioned building a public beach on West Pond, hundreds of individual picnic areas, and sports fields. But the effort never went further than a study, which placed a cost of construction at nearly $1 million.
More recently, former supervisor Steve Tommasone revisited the plans when the town explored the prospects of building a passive-use park on the property in 2007; that idea never came to fruition.
Now Rotterdam's eight-member Parks and Recreation Commission is recommending the town slowly advance a similar passive-use park vision on the property off Route 5S over the next decade. And this time, they've given it a name: Bicentennial Park.
The new park would incorporate the former Bonded Concrete property, which would be transformed into the centerpiece of a system that would connect many of Rotterdam Junction's recreation sites. In addition to establishing a boat launch and pavilion on the larger of the two existing ponds, the plan calls for linking the park with the Mohawk-Hudson Bike-Hike trail, about 64 acres of state Canal Corporation land to the north, the Woestina ball fields and the Mabee Farm Historic Site.
"We're saying basically let's move forward, but we're giving ourselves a 10-year time period," explained Ron Severson, commission chairman.
Severson hopes that most of the labor and materials to shape the former Bonded Concrete parcel will be secured through donations. He's also hoping to explore grant opportunities through the state and federal government.
"We want to try to pull together as much as we can with volunteers and community support," he said. ..............>>>>......................>>>>.................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01502&AppName=1
