As one who has worked in the mental health field I have found 99.9% of folks in a "group home" are there because they are unable to attend to their basic daily living skills.  Medication management, cooking, budgeting, personal hygiene, food shopping etc. that is why they are there.  They have been out in the communities in supported housing and could not maintain themselves thereby causing harm to themselves.

As far as "nursing homes" I can only speak about the ones in the area and near here.  If one has a mental health diagnosis most nursing homes will not take you so there is some need for a change in this regard.

No one should be denied nursing home care at a government subsidized nursing home. What is interesting is how nursing homes will take folks with Alzheimer and Dementia which are brain disorders also but not for any other Mental Health diagnosis.

Alzheimers and dementia has an unspecific diagnosis but is 'usually' associated with older age.  This is apparently just a shift in governmental health care. Hospitals will be, in fact are pretty much already, 'acute/emergency' services only. Patients are quickly released to another facility, be it rehabilitation, nursing home or even home.

It's just a shift in care, responsibility and cost.

I has been determined both Alzheimer and Dementia are organic brain disorders which Bipolar and Depression (mood disorders)and Schizophrenia (thought disorder) are also.

Yes, I agree it is a shifting but at whose expense I don't believe folks in group homes should be forced to go out in the community where it has been proven time and time again they are unable to take care of themselves and the nursing homes won't take them because they need assistance but not at that care level.  For for others aging who have mental illness they should not be denied nursing home care at government subsidized nursing home.

There are cases where folks are put in group homes and nursing homes that need not be there, but I believe a better approach would be advocacy support for those via a number of agencies and organizations that are available for such.  To have a blanket one size fits all approach is ridiculous.

By the way I think Obamacare stinks although the new law was due to MH advocates who had been abused and forced into group homes and nursing home when they were able to take care of themselves.  Many states do this.

Alzheimer disease is only proven at autopsy. Dementia and stroke victims often times present the same symptoms as alzheimer. And when I say stroke victims, these are the people that have mini TIA's when not even the medical professional can confirm. People have TIA's and they don't even know it. They are not even detectable. But as they have them, alzheimer symptoms appear.

Alzheimer is not always easy to diagnose. I have seen people put on meds to treat alzheimer disease, when it is the wrong diagnoses. Symptoms are not the definitive diagnosis for alzheimer disease.

Same with dementia. Is it from small TIA's? And effect of major surgery? Clogged arteries? Side effect of certain meds?

In my opinion, alzheimer disease and dementia should not be covered under the umbrella of 'mental illness'.

Here's the deal......all nursing homes that accept government $$ will be abolished(unless folks have the cash).....there by pushing EVERYONE out to assisted/senior/living resource centers.....we are responsible for ourselves and our families(love 'em or hate 'em) will carry the bag.....

pay attention......nursing homes were forced to take EVERYONE, back in the day, and EVERYONE(regardless of their pre-disposition of diagnosis) were in mixed population and a bunch of semi-private and 4 bed wards......

so here we are with boomers to tend with and no place to go......mental illness or not......the Feds and the State disagree on ALOT......

I'm soooooo glad the boomers did such a fabulous job at keeping the government at bay and keeping the regulations down....turns out all they really cared about was their own personal well being via the commune......and the all the love it has to offer.....

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

Hey....by the time the boomers reach the nursing homes, pot will be legal, bingo will be replaced with lotto tickets and the music piped in will be Fleetwood Mac and the Stones! Sounds like a hell of a party!

And of course, dr. kovokian will be readily available to assist them!
