If a consumer receives an appliance rebate from the New York State government, does said government then have control over
the foods that are refrigerated, cooked, or prepared using the (subsidized) appliances?  No trans-fats, no sugary soda, etc.

I'm not in favor of these targeted programs that promote behavior or decisions deemed appropriate by those in government.
I would prefer to see payroll taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, etc. cut so that we, the people, can decide how we wish to
spend (or save) our money.

Stores set for appliance swap program
BY AMEERAH CETAWAYO Gazette Reporter

With lists and other labeling, Roy Matthews TV & Appliance Center in Scotia has organized its store to make it easy for customers to take advantage of a new appliance rebate program.
“We’ve been mentioning it to customers. Many of the customers have been asking about it,” said general manger Shayne Matthews. “We’re optimistic that it will bring in a fair amount of business.”
Retailers have stocked up in anticipation of New York state’s Great Appliance Swap Out, which begins today and runs until Feb. 21 as part of the federal Cash for Appliances program.
New York received $16.8 million in federal stimulus funds for the rebate program administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. The rebates will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are depleted.
The incentives, which range from $50 to $550, push consumers to replace old appliances and recycle them. Larger rebate amounts are offered to those who recycle their old appliance instead of setting it out on the curb.
Purchased appliances must have the Energy Star label that shows that they are 30 percent more energy-efficient than most models being sold and must be installed at a New York state residential address to be eligible for the rebate, according to Jeffrey Gordon, director of communications for NYSERDA.
After buying the appliance, an application form with the required documentation must be submitted to reserve a rebate. NYSERDA recommends that consumers check the state program’s Web site, http://www.nyapplianceswapout.com, or call 1-877-NY-SMART before making the purchase to make sure there is still funding available. An application form can also be found on the site. ........................>>>>...........>>>>...............http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01303&AppName=1

This is the biggest marketing scam ever!!

First...now we the taxpayers have to help pay for people to buy their appliances. Nonsense!

Second....to be eligible for the 'swap out' you HAVE TO purchase the appliances THEY tell you to buy. They are way overpriced!!!! There are appliances that cost less with the same energy efficiency.

If you fall for this government marketing scam, you will end up paying MORE than you should. Even with the 'taxpayer's stimulus money'!!!

Interesting.  I just visited Marcella's Appliances web site to see how to get my government "scooby snack" if I comply with the
government regulations re: energy efficiency.

http://www.marcellasappliance.com/

As I was on the home page, the flash animation (think that's what it's called) changed to content that indicated that John Marcella and Family
received the Schenectady County Democratic Committee 2009 Business Leader of the Year Award.    There was also content that stated that
they will be in their new location in March.

Looks like the construction of Marcella's new building was partially funded by the Metreplex.

http://www.downtownschenectady.org/downloads/1%2020%2009%20Marcella's%20to%20Build%20on%20Broadway.pdf

I am paticularly entertained by the last statement in the article that "Metroplex will quickly recoup its investment in the
project due to the large volume of sales generated by this top selling appliance store".  I assume that the business already
collects the additional 1/2% sales tax for Metreplex on its sales.  If my math is correct, for Metreplex to recoup the $250K grant,
the business will have to sell an additional $50M in product.  ($50M x 0.5% = $250K).  That is above the volume being
sold today.

Consumers swapped till they dropped
U.S.-funded appliance rebate program saw huge response

By ERIC ANDERSON BUSINESS EDITOR
First published in print: Tuesday, February 16, 2010

SCOTIA -- At Roy Matthews TV & Appliance Center, salespeople were scrambling Monday to keep up with demand as "New York's Great Appliance Swap Out" ended its first weekend.

The federally funded program, intended to stimulate retail sales while replacing old appliances with ones that are more energy-efficient, runs through Feb. 21. About one-quarter of the money available for rebates had been claimed by Monday afternoon.

The Federal rebate in many cases doesn't even cover sales tax in Schenectady County.  It is a scam.  Just another way to stuff the government coffers.  Another example of controlling people with their own money.
