Theater volunteer killed

SCHENECTADY -- A 78-year-old volunteer at Proctors Theatre was killed by a vehicle near the theater late Saturday night.
Police said Charlotte M. Gallo was crossing Broadway across from Stratton Plaza at 11:25 p.m. when a Dodge Ram pick-up truck struck her.
Proctors CEO Philip Morris said Gallo had volunteered in the theater's gift shop for three years. She was named Volunteer of the Year by the theater last September, according to a story published in the Times Union. My condolences to the Gallo family.  I haven't felt comfortable walking across the road down by Proctors at all since they changed that street.  I guess this just goes to confirm my feelings.

I'm not afraid to cross the street.  This was an unfortunate accident.  I always try to look both ways.  You should too, Kevin

This was indeed an very sad and tragic accident.  A wonderful woman who was loved and revered by all.  My condolences to the Gallo and Macejka families.

I did not know Mrs. Gallo, but it is a little dangerous down there when you cross.  Some spots are dark.

Driver who hit volunteer charged
    SCHENECTADY — A 36-yearold Schenectady man has been identified as the driver in the Jan. 2 accident that killed a Proctor’s volunteer.
    Andrew Corridore was charged Thursday with failing to yield to a pedestrian.
    Police say Corridore was driving a pickup truck south on Broadway, away from downtown, when he struck and killed 78-year-old Charlotte Gallo of Schenectady.
    Gallo was hit at about 11:30 p.m. as she returned to her car after a night volunteering at the Proctors’ gift shop during a “Wicked” show.
    Police believe Gallo was crossing at the mid-block crosswalk near the parking garage. One car, headed toward downtown, had just passed. That car, along with wind and snow, obscured her from Corridore until it was too late. Corridore was driving under the speed limit.
    Nonetheless, police spokesman Sgt. Eric Clifford said Friday that drivers must use caution when approaching crosswalks.
    The accident has prompted calls from Gallo’s family for a flashing light at the crosswalk, similar to lights further up Broadway for the mid-block crosswalk near the yearold Social Services building.
    There are signs leading up to the crosswalk near Proctors, and the crosswalk is marked.
