Price Chopper makes bid for western New York stores

Price Chopper is bidding to purchase nearly 20 grocery stores in central New York — acquisitions that would put the Schenectady-based chain in more direct competition with the popular Wegmans chain.

Price Chopper’s $54 million offer is for stores in the P&C chain, whose parent company, Penn Traffic Co., has filed for Ch.11 bankruptcy protection. Price Chopper is seeking to buy about a third of the stores owned by Syracuse-based Penn Traffic.

Price Chopper is headquartered in Schenectady and owned by the Golub family. Wegmans, meanwhile, is headquartered in Rochester and is also family owned.

The two grocery chains together dominate the upstate grocery market, but rarely have they directly competed. (Price Chopper does have four Syracuse-area stores.) That has led to accusations — strongly denied by both companies — that they have a secret agreement not to go head-to-head.

Wegmans’ decision to bypass the Capital Region as it expands into both the mid-Atlantic and New England has only fueled that speculation.

But Price Chopper’s bid to purchase stores in central New York, where Wegmans has long been established, seems to discredit the theory.

Most of the stores Price Chopper is trying to acquire are in central New York, in and around Syracuse. Additional stores that would be part of the acquisition are in New Hampshire, Syracuse and Vermont.

Price Chopper spokeswoman Mona Golub could not immediately be reached for comment this morning.

Will Wegman's reciprocate?

Hey, how about the vacant place on Curry rd for Wegmans?  Now I cant' remember what it was, and there has been discussion over the years about it.  Was it a Price Chopper or a KMart?  Or Both?

Count on the old Grand Union I bet. Also probably on the western end of town

I think Wagmans would knock Hannaford out if Wagmans opened up at the old Grand Union. Or anywhere in Rotterdam. I don't think 3 large market chains could 'share the wealth'. Besides them, there is still BJ's and smaller markets such as Gabriel's and Sals.

Price Chopper is based in Rotterdam and has given much back to the community, bringing with that very loyal customers. They are a local family owned market chain unlike Hannaford. IMO

Expansion in central New York waits on judge

    Price Chopper has made a bid to acquire nearly half of the P&C Food supermarkets being auction off by the bankrupt Penn Traffic Co., marking what could be the grocer’s largest move into the central New York market.
    The Golub Corporation offered to buy the 22 stores for $54.4 million from the company. They are predominantly spread throughout central New York but also include stores in Pennsylvania, Vermont and New Hampshire.
    The deal is pending an approval by the bankruptcy court judge, which could occur sometime early next month. Penn Traffic has already accepted Price Chopper’s bid.
    The supermarkets are among 46 that are being liquidated by Penn Traffic after the company filed for Chapter 11 protection in November. Price Chopper offered $12.3 million for four P&C stores in northern New York earlier this month but expanded the offer in documents filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware on Tuesday.
    Chief Executive Officer Neil Golub said the purchase would represent about a 10 percent growth for the chain. He said Price Chopper has operated a handful of locations in and around Syracuse since 1976.
    “This becomes a natural growth area for us since we are already in the Syracuse area,” he said Wednesday.
    Penn Traffic, which operates 79 supermarkets under three trade names, has been near bankruptcy for more than a decade. I stopped shopping at Price Chopper after I found out they contribute to Planned Parenthood.

Looks like some competition...Syracuse news today announced that TOPS MARKETS is submitting a bid for ALL P&C stores.  Originally they were only looking at some in Western NY and Pa, but now they are looking at taking over the whole thing.

Are you talking about the one on Hamburg St?  I would think that's far to small for a big chain, very little overall in parking

I think it's kind of name association with the loyal customers.   Year ago there was Central Market, Grand Union, A &P, Loblaws, and Albany Public Market.  Out of those, what is left?  Central Market turned Price "Chopper".  Unfortunately their prices show they don't live up to their name.  They are extraordinarily high.  Don't be fooled by those newspaper ads, they can carefully choose items that are lower price this week than Hannaford, and Hannaford can to the same.  But if you saw the other Hannaford ads, they are showiing what their price is over several weeks and how Price Chopper's is only one week and then goe back up.

Plus do you really want all your purchases on a record in a computer somehwere, your name, your address, your purchases, that you purchased by check in a given purchase, by credit card  on another.  

Why do you have to provide your name, address, phone number and driver's license info in order to get something on sale this week that's perhaps only 25 cents less than last week?  That's stupid.  THey were collecting social security numbers for the advantage card for a long time, and today, they require your social security number to cash a check which is in clear violation of the law, but no one seems to know about it.  Driver's license is sufficient form of ID to cash a check.

Remember what happened with information in Hannaford's computers a while back, how people's info was stolen if they paid by the plastic.   At Price Chopper you have to have the advantage card to cash a check and you give them your social security number when cashing it.  Too much invasion of privacy

I'm glad for Price Chopper.....go for it.....this IS America......but, no more loopholes for you than for me........

The Wegmans supermarket chain is a step above anything that we have locally IMHO.  Golub should be
careful not to entice a turf war.  If Wegmans locates stores in the Capital Region, I will do my shopping there.

Like others, I don't shop at Price Chopper often.  I find that the prices at Price Chopper are often higher even
when the items are on sale.  I prefer Hannaford.  Both chains will lose market share if Wegmans comes to
the area.

I agree Sunnie.  It is my belief that the Golub family has too much power and influence in government affairs.  
It is undeniable though that they give to the community and provide employment for many area residents.
