Gillibrand speaks out on senior scams
Lawmakers push senator’s proposal

BY JASON SUBIK Gazette Reporter

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, DN.Y., visited Schenectady on Saturday to promote her plan to fi ght scams against senior citizens.
“People over the age of 65 hold $16 trillion worth of assets, so when you’re talking about scam artists, online Internet scams, mail fraud, consumer financial advisers who prey on seniors, they see a population of seniors who have a large amount of resources,” she said. “In the Capital Region, more than 30,000 seniors have been hit by fraud, losing an estimate of more than $11 million.”
Local officials including Mayor Brian Stratton and Schenectady County Legislator Susan Savage appeared at a news conference with Gillibrand and U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko, D-Amsterdam, in front of Proctors.
Stratton said the topic of senior fraud is important to his city.
“We certainly have an aging population here, and her message is certainly well-timed. Anything we can do to help our parents and our loved ones and Schenectady’s senior community to become more aware and more insulated from those that would want to prey upon them financially we certainly should,” Stratton said.
Gillibrand and Tonko’s offices are holding a senior fraud workshop Jan. 5 at 11 a.m. at Schenectady County Community College. .................>>>>...............>>>>...................http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....r01501&AppName=1

What a joke, she wants to prevent seniors from being scammed but she's voting for health-care that will cut services to seniors. I hope Giuliani runs against her next election and we can vote, Mrs I'll vote for whatever my party wants Kirsten, out of office. She's in trouble with seniors and this is her way of trying to get back some of the senior votes.

Hey, she's aligning herself with the heavy hitters (tic), stratton, savage and tonko! Now that's a winning team, huh?

Gillibrand law to protect seniors worth passing

Re Nov. 29 article, “Gillibrand speaks out on senior scams”: I want to publicly commend and congratulate U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand for initiating legislation to combat financial fraud against senior citizens.
The senator’s bill, which is also supported by Rep. Paul Tonko, county Legislator Susan Savage and Schenectady Mayor Brian Stratton, would increase criminal and civil penalties for defrauding seniors, as well as to prosecute fraudulent investment advisers who target seniors. I pray that Gillibrand’s legislation will be approved by Congress and the president, to help our current senior citizens and those in the future.
With regard to protecting our seniors, I encourage Gillibrand and Tonko to also spearhead legislation to forever prohibit the president and Congress from dipping into the Social Security Trust Fund.
Over the years the president and Congress have used more than a trillion dollars from Social Security to finance their pet projects. That was indeed unfair to our seniors, and I would also say possibly illegal.
If any legislators or the president dip into Social Security before the senior citizen legislation is adopted, I believe they should be charged with committing a “people-oriented” crime.

This legislation is a day late and a dollar short because the legislature has already robbed all the money that they could out of the Social Security Trust and now the damage is done.

I received a letter a few days ago, saying that my mom's medical coverage has changed. Her in-hospital stays will now cost her $300 per day for the first 5 days as compared to her $400 one time co-pay. The letter states that it is a mandate. (state? federal?) I will be calling them next week to get more details.

IMHO seniors will be hurt even more if the cuts to Medicare go thru because in order to do it they will have to cut services and limit what will be covered. There may be fraud in the Medicare system but there's not $400,000,000 in fraud. Just follow where the money goes and it will most likely be spent on the undocumented and unions like the SEIU who have been promised health-care but the money isn't there to cover them.

If there's really $400 BILLION in Medicare fraud why don't they go after it now? Why wait until Obamacare passes {if ever}? More smoke and mirrors from the usual sources.

That's crazy - how can they change it in mid-term??

I'd definitely be all over that one, let me know how it turns out.
