Woman’s body
found in closet of
vacant apartment
    SCHENECTADY – Police are investigating the discovery Sunday night of a body inside the apartments over the Open Door Bookstore at 132 Jay St. by a resident of the building.
    Police said the unidentified resident found the body of a white female around 7:15 p.m., in a closet of apartment 11, which was vacant, Sgt. Eric Clifford said.
    The body was covered with a jacket, Clifford said. Police on Sunday night were not sure how the woman died.
    Police had not identified the woman, and the woman’s age was unknown, though Clifford placed it as somewhere between 20 and 50 years old.
    It is also unclear how long the body was inside the apartment before it was found.
    An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on the body this morning, Clifford said.

SCHENECTADY -- Autopsy results on the body of a woman discovered over the weekend in the closet of a vacant downtown apartment have come back inconclusive but police say it does not appear she was murdered.

     
"At this point, detectives feel there is no foul play," said City Police Spokesman, Sgt. Eric Clifford, adding additional forensic tests will be conducted to determine the woman's exact cause of death. Police are still trying to contact family members and have not released her identity.

The woman -- described as white and in her late 20s or early 30s -- was found dead just after 7:30 p.m. Sunday. She was discovered in Apt. 11 on the second floor of 132 Jay St., not far from City Hall. The apartment is upstairs in the building that also houses the Open Door book store and The Open Door gift gallery, not far from City Hall.

Police say two bodies not likely foul play victims

    SCHENECTADY — The two bodies found in Schenectady do not appear to be victims of foul play, Public Safety Commissioner Wayne Bennett said.
    The woman found dead in a Jay Street apartment on Sunday may have died of a drug overdose, Bennett said. Police are waiting for a toxicology report that may not be completed for six weeks.
    “Early indications are no foul play — there was no indication of trauma,” Bennett said. The same is true of a second body, found Monday afternoon far behind the Front Street Pool, Bennett said. The body of a man was found on the riverbank, nearly in the water, in an area only accessible from a wooded area where homeless occasionally live.
    An autopsy is scheduled for today, but police don’t expect to fi nd evidence of foul play.
    “It appears to be natural causes,” Bennett said.

    Patrisha Clay had been coming to Bethesda House, a day shelter for the homeless, for at least a dozen years.
    During that time she battled drug addiction and life on the streets.
    Program officials and friends would talk to her about getting help and changing her life, said Margaret M. Anderton, Bethesda House executive director.
    But she never did. On Monday, police identified Clay, 51, as the woman found dead Sept. 27 inside a Jay Street apartment closet.
    “Part of the conversation is acceptance and understanding that until a person is ready to make that decision, there’s nothing you can say to change their mind,” Anderton said. “You can just offer.”
    Clay’s identity was released Monday after investigators were unable to find next of kin. They are asking anyone who knows of relatives to contact police at 382-5245.
    Police investigated her death, but found no indication of foul play. The death had gotten extra scrutiny because the apartment wasn’t hers. It formerly belonged to a friend, police spokesman Sgt. Eric Clifford said, and police believe she had a key.
    She was found by the wife of the building superintendent as they prepared the apartment to be rented, Clifford said. She was found laying down in the closet, a jacket covering her.
