SCHENECTADY -- Federal stimulus money will be used to pave 7.5 miles of Route 5, including portions of Central Avenue in Albany and State Street in Schenectady, and add 36 new bus shelters.

The street is one of the busiest in the Capital Region and the most heavily traveled route on Capital District Transportation Authority buses. Some 43,000 vehicles a day use the roadway.

The work will begin this month in Schenectady and continue through fall 2010.

I bet it gets paved in the next month, no matter how busy the schedule is.

Was this stimulus money for job creating or infrastructure? I know that expanding infrastructure does create jobs, but only temporally. What happens after the roads are done?

Also, where are rotterdam's sewers? Isn't that infrastructure in areas of town where businesses can come in and create jobs?

Who cares about sewers, we just got part of Duanesburg Road paved.  A good portion of it, too.

Too bad Curry Road right by 5 corners feels as though you're driving over a rumble strip every time you pull up to it.

Yall are forgetting, they've GOT to pave the way for Proctors! Never mind the 890/Broadway intersection that's a nightmare with lights after a show gets out - when everyone's running like hell OUT of Schenectady. State St in the Proctors Mile is more important.

Route 5 paving project gets under way
Saturday, September 19, 2009

Gazette Reporter

CAPITAL REGION — Construction began Friday on a $6.2 million project that will improve bus, vehicle and pedestrian traffic along Route 5, the Capital Region’s busiest transportation corridor.
State Department of Transportation Acting Commissioner Stanley Gee and U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko, D-Amsterdam, on Friday announced the project during a news conference at the DOT’s Regional Headquarters on State Street in Schenectady.
In a side issue, just before the event began, a Rotterdam woman crashed her car into the headquarters building. Police said Hannah Johnson, 22, was not injured.
Police said she was trying to light a cigarette while turning right from State Street onto Broadway and hit the building to avoid a pedestrian crossing the street.
At the news conference, the state said it is using federal stimulus money to do the work. It involves resurfacing nearly eight miles of Route 5 between downtown Schenectady and downtown Albany, building 36 new handicapped-accessible bus shelter ramps, installing curb cuts at 159 intersections and upgrading pedestrian signals at 34 intersections.
Callanan Industries of Schenectady received the contract for the work. Work is scheduled to be completed by fall 2010.
The work will prepare the corridor for the Capital District Transportation Authority’s Bus Rapid Transit service, BusPlus. BusPlus is designed to relieve congestion, promote use of the rapid transit system, reduce energy consumption and improve air quality, among other enhancements, officials said...................>>>>.....................>>>>.........................................http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2009/sep/19/0919_route5/
