Darwin Brudos knew he’d be paying more taxes when he received notice that his assessment was increasing by $253,000 last spring.
The 82-year-old retired General Electric engineer has owned his modest home on 120 acres along Putnam Road for nearly a half a century and has no intention of ever developing the land. So when his school tax bill came from Schalmont this month, he was shocked to find that all but 10 acres of his property were considered non-residential property under the district’s dual tax system.
    He was even more surprised to find an additional tax bill for $4,520 was retroactively applied to his property, which is now valued at $514,632. As a result, Brudos’ school tax bill this fall totaled $12,460 — an increase of nearly $10,000 over what he paid in 2008.
    “I was pretty sure they’d go up, but I had no idea how much,” he said Tuesday. “In no way was I prepared to pay this amount.”
