The Rotterdam windmill has found a new home. And this time around, town officials are hoping it will be permanent. The iconic structure that has sat in front of the dilapidated Curry Road Shopping Center for more than six years is being dismantled and moved to a freshly poured concrete pedestal at the head of the Great Flats Nature Trail off West Campbell Road. With the shopping center’s redevelopment looming, town officials decided to relocate the windmill to a more suitable area of Rotterdam. Supervisor Steve Tommasone said the windmill’s exterior will eventually be refinished to give it a more fitting appearance for one of the town’s main gateways. “The windmill is obviously a strong symbol for the town,” he said Wednesday. “We want to have it in an area where it will be noticed and will be a permanent attraction.” Town crews began dismantling the windmill this week and should have it at its new location by the end of the month. Eventually, the town hopes to establish a small education center by the windmill, complete with park benches and picnic tables. Rotterdam adopted the windmill as a town symbol in 1989 as a way to honor the town’s Dutch heritage. Street signs posted at all of the entrances to the town are all in the shape of a windmill. The wooden windmill is about 17 feet tall from blade tip to base and was originally built in 1949 as a display to attract visitors to Albany’s first home builder’s show. Afterward, the structure was purchased by Fred Mastrianni, who affixed copper flashing to the exterior and moved it to his nursery in Guilderland. In 1987, Mastrianni moved the structure to his home, where it was used as a storage shed until being donated to the town in 1992. Rotterdam first moved the windmill to an area near Mallozzi’s Restaurant, on Curry Road, but took it down about a decade later upon the request of the Mallozzi family. Rotterdam’s Sunshine Rotary Club spent about a month restoring the windmill, when town officials abruptly placed it in front of the shopping plaza. At the time, Rotterdam was planning to build a new government complex on the 10-acre property, which had been donated to the town by the Golub Corporation. But the new town hall never came to fruition due to its prohibitive cost. What a campaign stunt. How much ya wanna bet that the Curry Road Shopping Plaza looks the same this time next year as it does right now? Moving the Windmill to look as if something is getting done with that vaccant dump. No date certain on the start of development. They're playing a shell game.

They could have burned the windmill on the spot for all I care. No conspiracy, it's just funny how they linked the moving of the windmill, with future development of the old K-Mart plaza. Smoke and mirrors.
Rotterdam should do a study on creating a windmill relocation taxing district. There are just some services that the private sector can't perform for a town. Moving valuable town landmarks is definitely one of those services.
Vote Tommasone-Signore-Suhrada on November 3rd if you support more permanent taxing districts and larger public unions.

I forgot...Vote the No New Tax Line on November 3rd. They're the only alternative to those pandering to public workers and their union support. The current Republican leadership takes the "if you can't beat'em join'em" philosophy. Mertz didn't join'em - he was booted. O'Connor and Littlefield were denied endorsement because they didn't join'em.
Self proclaimed conservative Suhrada favors creating a NEW taxing district. He believes it is more efficient and secure for the Rotterdam residents to rely on a government run emergency response service with it's own taxing district, even though a privately owned Mohawk Ambulance provide the same service. Why didn't he make that same argument for the Glendale Nursing Home and support Susan Savage proposal to renovate it? - He changed his stripes for political survival and he joined'em.
These are the Republicans that candidates O'Connor and Littlefield were asked to support in return for Republican endorsement. When they said they wouldn't support those republicans that didn't share their conservative ideology, they were denied endorsement. Would you support these RINO's?? Not if you have any sort of conviction.

You should take a job as spokesman for the Obama administration, you will go far. so ya think vanadalism exists more on the west side...I dont think so !! Hamburg and Curry end of town is scary, the hotel 8 has been robbed three times, stewarts more than once...the park vandalized several times the old grand union and laundrymat are grafittied regularly and dont forget you are just over a mile from the hill....The preserve area has not of that activity..
