Don't forget, this is the same school board -- except for newcomer Diane Herrmann -- that did nothing to stop the tactics of alleged bomber/terrorist Steve Raucci.

Back on school board, Bellick defends record

BY MICHAEL GOOT Gazette Reporter

Linda Bellick returned to her seat on the Board of Education on Wednesday night with an impassioned defense of her record.
Bellick fills the seat vacated by Joyce Wachala, who outpolled her in the May election but resigned earlier this month to care for her diabetic child.
Bellick arrived late to the meeting after the resolution to appoint her had passed. After she was sworn in, President Maxine Brisport asked if she would like to make a few brief comments.
Bellick then proceeded for about 15 minutes with a wide-ranging defense of her record and stated that she carefully weighed whether she wanted to return, given the negative media attention. She ultimately decided to come back because she had left things unfi nished, including the annual Pump It Up event that promotes health and fitness and the committee she serves on that helps students transition among grade levels.
“Despite all of the news stories, I felt that I had made an impact and I had helped our district,” she said. “I believe it is about the kids and providing the best education we can with the resources we have.”
Bellick defended the board’s actions in the matter of Steven Raucci, the former facilities director who is facing terrorism charges for allegedly planting explosive devices at people’s homes as part of a pattern of intimidation. She said neither she nor other board members knew of these alleged activities. She only knew that Raucci could annoy employees with his efforts to conserve energy in district buildings.
She said she did take responsibility for appointing him to a management position while he was head of the local CSEA.
“I can assure you there will never be a dual supervisor-union leader appointment made again,” she said.
She added that the district had wanted to release the report it commissioned into Raucci’s alleged................>>>>....................>>>>.............http://www.dailygazette.net/De.....401&ViewMode=GIF

New Schenectady school board member silenced on Raucci
Linda Bellick had started giving details of internal report on Steven Raucci

By LAUREN STANFORTH, Staff writer
First published in print: Thursday, August 27, 2009

SCHENECTADY -- Newly appointed former school board member Linda Bellick gave a 15-minute speech at Wednesday night's meeting in which she was stopped midsentence by the school's attorney when Bellick began to talk about what is in the district's secret internal report about former facilities supervisor Steven Raucci.

Bellick, who was attempting to correct what she feels is unfair media coverage about herself and the school district, at one point began to discuss Raucci, who has been indicted on charges of arson and terrorism for placing explosive devices on cars and at the homes of his perceived enemies.

The school board has been criticized for appointing Bellick, an incumbent who received the lowest number of votes in May's election, to a seat abruptly vacated by new school board member Joyce Wachala. Bellick was sworn in Wednesday night and immediately resumed her duties.

Bellick read from a written statement that she takes responsibility for allowing Raucci to be a CSEA unit president while also being a boss, saying she was new to the school board at the time and was not "union-savvy." However, she said no one on the board knew about Raucci's alleged activities. "If we need a lie detector test, bring it on," she said. School board members have previously said they cannot talk about Raucci because of lawsuits filed against the district by employees who have claimed Raucci harassed them.

Bellick went on to say the internal report, which the board initially said would be released, is now secret because attorneys found there is personal information contained in the interviews. When Bellick began to say the sentence "We know no one who was interviewed," school attorney Shari Greenleaf made a noise from the audience, followed by board President Maxine Brisport telling Bellick she couldn't continue to read from that part of her speech..............>>>>...............>>>>....................http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=835426&category=YTSCHENECTADY

For the better reporting read the TU. Horrible KRAT Linda Bellick was stopped in mid-sentence while uttering complete lies. "Nobody knew nuthin, nobody saw nuthin, we were all unaware?" It's sickening. The notes of Stircos disprove all the lies and revisionist history. The Mad Bomber ran Linda's campaign-remember?

This is all about politics{as usual}. A honest CONS quit so the KRATS wanted a KRAT back. Even worse, newbie Diane Herrman voted YES! on Bellick. That should wake some of you up. Party first-principles second? This is all about the DEM Party taking complete control of the State's worst Schenectady Schools.

It's not politics as usual....it's incestuous NYS and the monkey on our back.....AS USUAL....folks around here seem to
'create a problem' so they can 'create a job'....then they assist the 'dogs for hire' and 'pay for protection'

Agreed- the best move would have been leave the seat open. The voters could not stomach a third election. Hermann's "open process" was a hoot. Another dog and pony show and then pick the human lie detector Bellick?

Don't discount the one party effect in all this. They needed to bring the DEM patronage queen back? There is no bottom to this scandal.

Schenectady taxpayers must play trump card on school district

It is sad reading about the behavior of the Schenectady school board and their treatment of citizens who attend school board meetings and vote for budgets and board members.
We were always told as kids, and adults, that ultimately the voting booth is where people can make a difference. It is not only your right, but your obligation. Now we must add, “Unless you live in Schenectady.”
Searching the local and state School Board Association Web sites, one does not readily see relationships mentioned between school board members and local voters, specifically taxpayers. However, one of the goals listed on the Web site indicates openness for meetings and information flow. I think this perception of the Schenectady school board was wiped out at the Aug. 17, meeting.
Also, the perception of an old slogan — “Taxation without representation,” which appears in history books regarding a “tea party” — may be appropriate for the voters in Schenectady.
In either case, the voter/taxpayer has no recourse, even in the voting booth. When voters do express their opinions, they are ignored by the school board, as exemplifi ed in the recent replacement of a vacancy. I do not think anyone would argue that the recently appointed lady is a nice person. The point of voter support should answer the question of choosing her as a replacement. Also, I would say that her acceptance of the position does bring her credibility into question and could be perceived as having the same behavior on a par with the [other] school board members.
If you consider all the people being written about (supposed perpetrators) in this chapter of the Schenectady school district, it could be perceived that the behavior of the person currently being detained, at least so far, is not too dissimilar from the behavior of those in administrative positions and on the board of education.
Maybe the only recourse for voters/taxpayers, approximately 30,000 in the city, is to get together and withhold payment of taxes, or possibly get the rules changed to place the school district under the jurisdiction of the city government, as it is in other locations in the state and country.

Sch’dy school evokes Kafka, and the Kremlin

Re Aug. 27 article, “Back on school board, Bellick defends record”: Once again, the Schenectady board of education has proven itself to be the most anti-democratic organization this side of the Kremlin! As your columnist Carl Strock previously said, “you have to see it to believe it.”
At a meeting Aug. 26 they chose to appoint back onto the board the member who ran absolutely last in May’s election, the person who was purposely and decisively voted off the board by the citizens. Just how much more anti-democratic can you get?
Given this situation, the board could have appointed a former member who retired gracefully and was not voted out. The only stipulation would be that the individual not run in the next election. Democracy would be fulfilled.
Further evidence of this anti-democratic arrogance by the board was the denial of a citizen’s right to speak during the public comment period. A Kafkaesque, “Simon says” rule was exploited over a five-minute plus banter to deny a speaker his three minutes. Next followed a rambling, quarterhour, self-serving bloviation by the newly appointed member reminiscent of Fidel Castro in his heyday.
In summary, the rot is quite extensive throughout the entire organization. The sensational news items that keep occurring are but symptoms of a core malaise. At the heart of this malaise is the basic arrogant anti-democratic attitude of the government body. Schenectady needs and deserves much better.
And so it goes.
