NEW YORK — Hanqi Miao said she wanted to donate her eggs to help infertile couples reproduce, but she acknowledged the money is good, too: She said she’ll be paid about $5,000. “Who doesn’t want money in your hand?” said the 21-year-old woman, who will have to undergo hormone treatments that could abnormally swell her ovaries to the size of small grapefruits and cause discomfort. Soon, New York women will be able to donate their eggs not only to help others get pregnant but also for stem cell research. And they’ll still be able to get reimbursement of up to $10,000 — paid for by taxpayers. The board that oversees funding of the state’s stem cell research recently voted to make New York the only state that allows taxpayer dollars to be used to pay for women to donate their eggs strictly for stem cell research. State health officials say it is necessary to compensate women for the burden, discomfort and expense related to the donation process so that suitable eggs can be found for stem cell research. But some critics say the policy could encourage cash-strapped women to take risks with their health. They question the use of what they call “embryonic human life” for research. Researchers believe stem cell research could lead to treatments for debilitating illnesses such as diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. Re July 31 article, “Donors to be paid with tax dollars”: I was very upset to see that my tax dollars will be used to pay women to donate their eggs to create new embryos for research. Why did it take Congress years, a few presidential vetoes and a new president to reach the point the NIH [National Institutes of Health] has, using leftover embryos for research? Because this is very controversial. Then New York allows an un-elected committee to decide to reimburse women for eggs to create new embryos for research. Where was the debate? Although the New York Stem Cell Board may be qualified to make judgments on specifi c ethical questions, I am not willing to have them make such a policy decision without any public referendum. Nor did we have an opportunity to weigh in when Gov. Paterson specified money for “Targeted Projects in Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research ($6.5 million) to derive and characterize new human embryonic stem cell lines” [quote from governor’s Web page]. Our tax dollars are being spent on something many don’t agree with, and were not allowed to vote on. The time spent arguing over leadership would have been better spent discussing an issue like this, at least bringing it to the public’s attention before it’s a done deal. There are alternatives to embryonic stem cells. That’s where we should be concentrating our research efforts.
Why? What difference would it make? we pay tax dollars to help addicted gamblers because of government sanctioned gambling. Research, with government control oversight, of the mind or the body----pick ya poison.....
