That might be enough to get Stratton voted out...thinking about the future?  No Democrat in their right mind thinks about the price of ANYTHING down the road.  If you get free money, just find a way to spend it...even if it's spending on something that's not needed...or on something that's needed that you can't pay for in the future.

Son of Sam is finished between the reval fiasco and his failure to reform the SPD. Did you hear his new plan? Abolish the SPD. That makes sense during a crime and gang explosion? Well, it does to the Gazetto. Then they wonder why no one buys the paper?

This cartoon is a complete disgrace. Their are have many good cops that risk their lives daily in horrible crime ridden neighborhoods. While being stabbed in the back by a clueless Mayor. Son of Sam constantly blames his woes on the SPD contract that he voted for! That McCarthy voted for! Enough already-come up with a plan to fight crime/gangs or leave office.

I agree that it is the 'leaders' that have approved what the cops can get away with today, via their contract. And now the leaders are crying in their beer.

Well perhaps this will be a lesson for the next time they negotiate contracts, huh?

And may I also say, that the 'leaders' are all but advertising our robust welfare program bringing to the city some low lives! (notice I didn't say 'all') And the leaders of both the city government and the plex have done nothing but worry about and dump money into 2 blocks of state street that is STILL not bringing back a return on our investment. Of course the gazette will tell you just the opposite. And they wonder why their readership is down. People are smartening  up!

They can have all the so called summer fests and central park give-a-ways, that the chamber and the gazette promotes, but the bottom line is that the city of schenectady is a pig sty! And until they get a handle on crime and start to clean up this crap...there will always be this problem!

I would suggest setting up police sub stations in high crime/risk areas such as mt.pleasant FIRST! Place a moratorium on any further developments by the plex or anyone else.

Do any of these people know how to read? Just read Gulliani's book on how he cleaned up and lowered the crime rate in NYC!

You just can't make sh*t shine....really!

That isn't really a very good analogy because with a few coats of good varnish you can get it polished up pretty good-
But if you poke it with a stick - your gonna make it stink-

What we have here are one group with the varnish and one poking with the stick-

Dont forget...we need judges and jails and laws that actually make police work 'worth while'.......not 'pre-crime' crap......

Stratton right to turn down new police grant

Re July 29 article, “City offered $1.8M to hire 8 new officers”: Thank goodness for Mayor Stratton’s denial of the $1.8 million grant for eight new police officers. Acceptance of this grant will be allowed if negotiation of the existing conditions — exorbitant salaries and retirement benefits, excessive vacation and sick time, slow response times — can be addressed and modified.
History has shown that the above changes are not going to take place. There will be no help from the union, the state Legislature, the court system or the so-called good police officers.
This could be the point of no return to the status quo. The time for law enforcement mergers is ripe for implementation — the time for fair pay for fair work schedules, the time for changing the mind-set from “I’ve got the power” to “how can I help any citizen I come in contact with?”

Hiring more cops might cut overtime

Re Aug. 3 article, “Injuries, absences up police overtime”: When your columnist Carl Strock lists the salaries of our Schenectady police force each year, one can see that overtime hours double or triple the salaries of many officers and administrators.
Perhaps hiring the eight more officers that Schenectady has been offered grant money for would end up saving money in the end [July 29 Gazette].

Stratton right to question COPS grant

Re July 29 article, “City offered $1.8M to hire 8 new officers”: I hear that the federal government is offering Schenectady $1.8 million to hire police officers. However, the money is finite and runs out after three years, leaving the city on the hook for future legacy costs. Three cheers to Mayor Brian Stratton for questioning this “gift” and examining the responsible way to handle it. Or, better yet, how about rejecting it?
What is it with government entity “A” giving taxpayer money to government entity “B” so that government as a whole gets bigger? It all redounds to government increasing in size and scope. It has nothing to do with efficiency or cost effectiveness. It has only to do with increasing the size of government.
We are faced with the biggest economic downturn since the Great Depression. The federal Treasury reports the largest decrease in revenues in over 60 years. The private sector is shrinking while the government “bite of the apple” is increasing.
It’s time for responsible government leaders to say no to the rampant growth of the public sector! It’s time for people like Mayor Brian Stratton to say “no thanks” to the ropes by which municipalities can hang themselves — and hang the taxpayer in the process. Good for you, Mr. Mayor. Now, just say no!

Don’t put more cops on Schenectady gravy train

Re the July 29 article, “City offered $1.8M to hire 8 new officers”: The addition of more police to the Schenectady force is a great idea. Just think of the wonderful opportunity they will have for more “paid administrative leave.” Only in America.
