I don't think it's an issue of 'who came out looking worse'. (who really cares?) And Eunice was the only one who 'publicly' made this political. Remember...'Even if it kills me, I'm staying'.

Does Ms. Laura have to pass a civil service test 'before' and 'if' she chose to run?

And as far as it being newsworthy...perhaps you are correct when you ask if it really is. But let me remind everyone that we live in a county where patronage jobs, and political positioning runs rampant. I'm not suggesting that this is the case here. But stranger things have happened.

Mr. Tommasone feels that the town should not bend the rules and hire someone from the
list.  The people in this town need to get over themselves.  It is a civil service typist position, not a political appointment.

Ok like he never bend the rules before......

Eunice Esposito, town clerk forever

I was pleased to read in the April 22 Gazette newspaper that Eunice Esposito won’t be retiring (as Rotterdam town clerk).
We here in Rotterdam need her.

Rotterdam has rules, I thought that the rules were made up as needed. How about the state rule [law] that says that a town with a population of over 20,000 people couldn't burn brush outside, you know the kind of burning that went on every weekend in Masullo Estates that the town ignored even though the neighbors complained numerous times. The town follows rules only when it's convenient for them to do so.

Don’t even think about dumping Eunice Esposito

Re April 22 article, “Town clerk says spat with supervisor won’t force her out”: Atta girl, Eunice. You haven’t changed in the 50 years we [have] known you.
I don’t know this lady, Laura Lee Cigina, but if Eunice says she has what it takes to work in her office, that’s good enough for me. And it should be good enough for the people of Rotterdam who use that office.
A note to [Supervisor] Steve Tommasone: Eunice will leave that office when she is ready; she has many friends in Rotterdam.

Ya know what? Who and how did this become a 'dumping eunice' issue? Whether we agree or not, this is NOT all about EUNICE! In all do respect, eunice needs to get over herself. It is a 'clerk' position for God's sake.

All that happened was that tommasone was looking to 'possibly' replace ms.laura because she did not have a civil service test under her belt. Now, whether this move was politically motivated or not, who cares? However, why wasn't the issue of the civil service test brought up a long time ago. Why now?

And sorry to tell ya Ruth, but eunice is not the decision maker on who stays and who goes. However, she should have input. Also, it is apparent that eunice has many friends. If she didn't, she wouldn't be in the elected position she is in now.

The way I read this whole thing..........eunice is a dem....ms. laura is a dem......ms. laura never took a civil service test which is an open door for tommasone (rep) to possibly secure a rep as a town clerk in the future. Simple as that! Done everyday. But this is clearly not about 'dumpling eunice'.

I was wondering.  Stevie Ego has a big state job handed to him by Jimmy Jump shot and Pataki.  Did he take a civil service test?  Is Stevie Ego on the targeted layoff lists?  (He should be)
Stevie Ego forgot about the huge scene he made when Siggy hired John DeGeorgio and the
comptoller Agarogso.  People need to be reminded what a jerk Stevie Ego is when it comes to this kind of stuff.  So BT not everybody does it the way Ego does it.  Leave this Laura woman be

Rotterdam clerk alleges GOP behind refusal to make hire

By PAUL NELSON, Staff writer
First published in print: Tuesday, May 5, 2009

ROTTERDAM — Clerk Eunice Esposito says residents know most of the time they can get her on the phone at Town Hall to answer questions when they can't reach anybody else there.

The lone Democrat is adamant that politics is behind Republican Town Supervisor Steven Tommasone and the other GOP board members refusal to hire her choice of a current worker to be a full time assistant in the clerk's office.

"I think it's political," she said of Tommasone's recent decision to conduct interviews last month for the typist position now being held by Laura Cagnina, a part timer.

Esposito wants the board to make Cagnina full time and suggested appointing her provisionally until she passes the civil service test, something she says the governing body has done before for outher town workers.

The supervisor denied he's playing partisan politics and says Rotterdam has to follow civil service rules as they search for the best person for the job. He said last month they interviewed candidates from the civil service list and Esposito chose not to be a part of the process. Cagnina is not on the list.

"We need someone with certain skill sets to modernize the office," the supervisor said Monday. He said he was especially offended by rumors in the community that he was trying to push out the 82-year-old Esposito who has been clerk for nearly 40 years. It's the Rotterdam Democrats who are playing politics since the GOP recent announced it will run Lynn Fiorillo against Esposito who is seeking her 13th term, Tommasone said.

Town Attorney Gerard Parisi says Esposito is asking the town "to ignore the people who have taken the test and that's not fair." Esposito says she needs an assistant and that Cagnina's work ethics are similar to hers and would be a perfect fit.

"She's prompt, efficient, an expert on detail and helps me run my office," Esposito said. "He (the supervisor) has no reason not to hire her."

County Personnel Administrator Kathleen Heap said she's had several conversations with Esposito about the matter. "This issue is between Miss Esposito and the town, and if she feels a position needs to be created in her office, she needs to work through them," Heap said.

Tomassone says he plans to fill the job, which pays about $31,000 a year, within the next week.

Where does the union stand on this debate?  Interesting that the union leadership has not taken a position.
Do they stand up for the union members who are competing for the position through the civil service system or do they ally with Esposito and support her claim that the Town Supervisor's position is politically motivated?

When you don't have the principle or the courage to take a stand, remain silent.

But when Esposito asked members of the Town Board to hire Cagnina as her full-time assistant in September, they instead brought her aboard as a part-time typist, a position they would keep on a provisional basis until someone could be hired through the county’s Civil Service office. Cagnina, who has previous experience working in offices, never took the civil service exam and is technically ineligible for the full-time post with the town.
Is this office going to need TWO people even after eunice leaves .... someday? I thought this part time position was to help eunice handle things. So now we are looking for a full time position at the rate of $31,000/year? Is this position REALLY needed or was it created just to help eunice as she requested?

Sorry folks...but I have an issue with this whole $31K/year job. Has the position of town clerk for Rotterdam gotten that busy over the years that we need to hire another? Or is it that eunice can't keep up? (in all do respect) IMHO

Haven't heard a thing. I would just like to know how this part time typist position, at eunice's request, became a full fledged $31K/yr position. As far as being 'lucky'.....I don't know about that one. I predict that if Ms.Laura gets the boot, the new hire, especially if it is a rep, will create a cat fight in the town clerk's office. We'll see the fur-a-flyin'!! IMHO
