Gov. freezes employees' pay, cuts his own salary The Business Review (Albany)
Gov. David Paterson has frozen the pay of all employees in his office and reaffirmed his commitment to cut his salary by 10 percent.
Paterson announced the moves, which are largely symbolic gestures, on Monday in response to the state’s ongoing fiscal problems. New York faces a record-high, $14 billion deficit in its next fiscal year, which begins April 1.
For that 2009-10 fiscal year, these actions save the state $450,000.
In a statement, Paterson repeated a pledge he made earlier this month to cut his annual salary by 10 percent, to $161,100. That’s a pay cut of $17,900.
“It is clear that emerging from this fiscal crisis will require shared sacrifice from all New Yorkers,” Paterson said. “My executive chamber staff will not be exempt. We must all play a role in helping close the budget gap.”
As part of his proposed budget, Paterson advocated eliminating a 3 percent salary raise for all state employees that’s scheduled, by contract, to occur in the new fiscal year.
