Dagostino gets Conservative nod in sheriff’s race
Democrats will also have him on their line

    The Conservative Party of Schenectady County has endorsed Rotterdam Police Lt. Dominick Dagostino for sheriff.
    Dagostino, 42, a member of the Conservative Party, now has a second line for the Nov. 4 general election in addition to the Democratic line. Democrats endorsed Dagostino in March.
    Conservative Party Chairman Randy Pascarella said that the executive committee’s endorsement was unanimous.
    “We endorsed Dom because of his 20 years of law enforcement. He is a leader in the department, where he is in charge of the entire detective division and runs the DARE officers. He is an administrator and he is well-educated and well-liked in the community,” he said.
    Pascarella said Dagostino rose through the ranks of the Rotterdam Police Department during his 20-year career.
    “He became a leader in the department because of his education and experience. That’s what we really like about Dom,” he said.
    “Rotterdam is the only accredited police department in the county, and it is because of leaders like Dom that it got that accreditation,” Pascarella said.
    Dagostino faces retired city police detective Joe Lazzari in the November general election. Lazzari, 60, is a member of the Independence Party running on the Republican ticket. He received the Independence Party endorsement Wednesday and was endorsed by the Republicans in April.
    The race to replace former Sheriff Harry Buffardi, a Democrat who resigned Feb. 27 to become a fulltime professor at Schenectady County Community College, is the first in memory in which candidates from minor parties are leading a countywide ticket with support from the major parties.
    The Conservative Party has 2,900 members in Schenectady County, making it the second largest minor party. The largest is the Independence Party, with 3,400 members.
    Dagostino has so far raised approximately $16,000 for the campaign, Pascarella said, and is expected to raise additional money through events in July and September. Pascarella said he thinks the campaign will cost approximately $50,000.
    Pascarella said Dagostino will be campaigning throughout the county from now until November. However, he will have to campaign after work weekdays and on weekends until his expected retirement in August. At that time, he will be able to campaign full-time.

forget the politicians. They are the ones telling everyone else on the boat, that they all
will soon be rescued from the sea of ignorance, while simultaneously hiding snickers in
their back pockets and thinking about which fat attorney to eat first.

2 sheriff’s candidates battle for Working Families line on ballot

The two candidates for Schenectady County sheriff will square off for the Working Families Party line in the only countywide primary on Sept. 15.
Independence Party sheriff’s candidate Joe Lazzari is running a write-in campaign for the Working Families line against Conservative Party sheriff’s candidate Dominick Dagostino. Dagostino is the endorsed candidate of the Working Families Party.
    The Schenectady County Board of Elections last week approved Lazzari’s Working Families petitions, seeking an opportunity to ballot, against objections fi led by Anthony Cervera, chairman of the Rotterdam Democratic Committee.
    Cervera was unable to knock off enough signatures to disqualify Lazzari’s petitions and he did not file suit in state Supreme Court to challenge the elections board’s decision by Thursday’s deadline.
    The Sept. 15 primary is limited to Working Families Party members. Dagostino’s name will appear on the ballot, but not Lazzari’s, said Art Brassard, Republican commissioner of the Board of Elections. “We will use the old mechanical machines. People have to go to the strip above the candidate’s name, open the little door and write in the person’s name,” Brassard said of those who wish to vote for Lazzari.
    Lazzari said he was pleased his petitions succeeded. “It is a good thing for us. We worked hard to get the names that we got and we will continue to work hard and see what happens,” he said.
    On the challenge of winning a write-in campaign, Lazzari remained optimistic. “We crossed the first hurdle and we will try and go over the next hurdle,” he said.
    Dagostino could not be reached for comment.
