I heard rumors today that the Republicans have decided to award their party endorsement for the Schenectady County Sheriff race to retired Schenectady Police Department Officer Joe Lazzari. There is also word that the Democrats on the County Legislature may direct that the Sheriff position, vacated by Harry Buffardi, remain unfilled until after Election Day. I believe that by allowing the Acting Sheriff to continue in that position until after Election Day and then appointing Dom Dagostino to Sheriff after Election Day would eliminate the political race for the office. Is this a calculated move by the Democrats to avoid a competitive race? If this occurs, will Judy run for reelection? What happened to Constantine? Will he run on a third party line? Who is the most qualified to act as the head of the county law enforcement agency, particularly at this time when discussions are underway regarding consolidation? Who will the Conservative party endorse? So many questions ...
Even if Dago is appointed, wouldn't there have to be an election 'eventually'? And who would do the appointing?
I also believe that Judy Dago is going to run again any way.

Will has it right-they want to give DD a full year in office to make it harder to vote him out. This is part of the big deal. Hooray for the incumbent Krats-another slam dunk!!

HAs anyone checked the legality of this? AFAIK, even if there is no one in the office, and it is up for election, the election still goes forward.

SCHENECTADY — The Schenectady County Republican Committee today endorsed Independent Joe Lazzari, a retired city police detective, for sheriff.
Lazzari will face Dominick Dagostino for the position, formerly held by Harry Buffardi, a Democrat. Dagostino is a Conservative who has been endorsed by the Schenectady County Democratic Committee.
The nerve of the REPS running another candidate! They refused to listen to the "sage" advice of Sallie, who demanded only one candidate on the ballot-like Cuba or a Schenectady School Bored Election. Brace yourself for another stunner.
Well, at least Sal was wrong again. Consistent. No one else wanted DD? Big surprise? Even a stopped clock is right twice a day but never our favorite Krat.
Reps endorsing indy's. Dems and cons cross endorsing...........It clearly appears that these political parties doesn't have an electable candidate of their own. Sad state of affairs.

The Schenectady County Republican Committee on Monday endorsed Independent Joe Lazzari, a retired city police detective, for sheriff. Lazzari will face Dominick Dagostino for the position, formerly held by Harry Buffardi, a Democrat. Dagostino is a Conservative who has been endorsed by the Schenectady County Democratic Committee. Lazzari, 60, said he will also seek other minor party lines, including that of the Independence Party. “I am running for sheriff because I want to continue serving our community,” Lazzari said. “I miss being a police officer and sincerely miss being in uniform and feel I have a lot to offer the community.” Lazzari said he is well-qualifi ed for the office, citing his long career in law enforcement and in the military. He retired in 2004 after 26 years with city police. He also retired after 36 years from the Air National Guard in 2008 with the rank of master sergeant. “I have more experience, and with age comes wisdom,” Lazzari said in distinguishing himself from Dagostino, 42, a lieutenant with Rotterdam police. Dagostino is the son of county Legislature Vice Chairwoman Judy Dagostino, a Democrat representing Rotterdam. Judy Dagostino’s four-year term on the Legislature expires this year. She is expected to seek re-election, according to party officials. Republican Chairman Tom Buchanan called Lazzari a “fantastic pick” for sheriff. “Joe brings a wealth of real world experience and insight into how we can improve public safety, give taxpayers a good return for their dollars by increasing efficiency and effectiveness, and most important, to ensure our county sheriff’s department coordinates in an effective manner with our local policing agencies to better serve Schenectady County families,” Buchanan said. Lazzari received an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Schenectady County Community College in 1987 and the Police of the Year Award in 1992. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving with the Air Force in the Southeastern Asia Theater from 1969-1970. This will be Lazzari’s second bid for the office of sheriff. In 1998, he ran against Buffardi, then undersheriff. Buffardi had four lines. Lazzari had one line, the Republican, and lost the countywide race by less than 1 percent of the total vote. Lazzari switched to the Independence Party last year. “I felt a change was needed, and it fits my demeanor. The ideologies are the same,” he said. Lazzari said he was not dissatisfied with the Republican Party. This time around, Lazzari faces a relatively unknown candidate in the race and is confident of winning. “In 1998, I was still on the force, but my heart was not in it. I am fully retired now and have more enthusiasm to devote to the campaign,” he said. The race pits two veteran lawmen from minor parties in a countywide race, a matchup that hasn’t happened in years. The leadership of the Conservative Party, whose membership consists of police officers, said they will support Dagostino in the race, giving him at least two lines. Lazzari said he is unsure how the rank and file will react to his candidacy. “I still have many friends on the force that I keep in touch with,” he said. Buffardi resigned Feb. 27 as sheriff to become a full-time professor at Schenectady County Community College. Buffardi was midway through his third term. Gordon Pollard is serving as acting sheriff. Gov. David Paterson could appoint someone to fill the vacancy, but there is no requirement that the governor, a Democrat, do so, said Brian Quail, chairman of the Schenectady County Democratic Committee. “I have not spoken to the governor, and I do not know if he is going to make an appointment,” Quail said. Schenectady County sheriff’s candidate Joseph Lazzari, a retired police detective, is not a sworn police officer under current state law and would have to take a refresher course to reclaim his police powers. The elected position of sheriff is primarily administrative and does not require the holder to be a sworn police officer, however, said County Attorney Chris Gardner. Without police powers, the sheriff cannot carry a weapon under his badge or make arrests. Lazzari is a member of the Independence Party, running with the endorsement of the Schenectady County Republican Committee in the Nov. 4 election to fill the vacant office of sheriff. He faces Dominick Dagostino, a Conservative running with the endorsement of the Schenectady County Democratic Committee.
