So, the Repubs will be endorsing Viscusi and this Zampino guy for District 4 County Leg?  They'll oppose Dagastino and Vellano?  What about rumors of Joe Guiderelli and Andy Pascarella having interest in running for County Leg?

And the Rotterdam Town Super race will be between Tommasone and Godlewski?  Who will have the Conservative party endorsement?  Assume that the WFP endorsement will go to the Dem.  What about the Independence party?

Goodness be, only Feb and things are sure getting interesting.  Why would so many have interest in serving in government?  Must be that they are all upstanding citizens who want to serve the public, cuz the pay isn't much.

Any guess on what the County Leg race in D4 will cost this year?  Again, why would people spend so much money and time to win a
job that pays, what?, $12K a year?  Glad that there are so many good people who place service above personal gain.

I would like to see the 'real books' of every single person/business that bought property from the plex. And I wonder how much the Pizza King is costing the plex(taxpayer) these days. I'm sure the move wasn't without monetary benefits!!

Don't be so naive about the reasons people are running. It has nothing to do with pay. Hopefully, there will be some actual business people that know something about job creation, staffing and budgeting. For a change.

Glad BT brought up Pizza King. He was forced off State@Clinton to make way for Death Ray's  "national retail chains" coming to Clinton's Square aka {Ditch}. The outside is complete and nothing, Nada, Zippo. But Benny, Death Ray promised Tiffany's is coming to Downtown! LOL!

Pizza King's business is way down. The fancy taxpayer paid sign did not help. Nobody dares walk on Jay St after dark. Despite "renaissance" nonsense many businesses close at dusk. By the way, get this month's coupon mag. Front page ad for Aperitivo -buy one-save on one! Coming next an early bird special?

I have never been at Aperitivo. But some people I know have been there say it is nice, but too 'upscale' for it's location.

More "Renaissance" News! Another Store to Flee Metrograft's Downtown!

The great gun shoppe on Erie Blvd, near the proposed Stratton Circle to Nowhere, announced today that they are leaving Downtown and taking 10 jobs and thousands of dollars in sales tax revenue to Amsterdam and Troy.

Downtown is no place to do business. A major reason given for fleeing was horrible Mayor Stratton and his idiotic plans to disrupt traffic and businesses on Erie Blvd. The gun shoppe will join the car wash, flower shop and many others as boarded up eyesores where sales tax and businesses used to be. Let's see when the Gazetto reports on yet another business fleeing Downtown.

Boy, that's "hot off the press" news ... thanks Benny.   I wonder if the porn shop has started building their new site yet - yanno, right up from DSS on Broadway, near the residential section.

"Just" the loss of a certain right that we have had since 1789 (12/15/1789)...

These are legal firearms sold to law abiding citizens and police officials. They are not closing they are opening 2 new stores in Amsterdam, Troy, and have a successful booming business on Central Avenue in Colonie. Another store fleeing Downtown and Death Ray. More job/tax losses for pathetic Schenectady County.

By the way Death Ray won another award! To go with his Krat Chamber award! Magician of the year! He took all your tax dollars and made them disappear. Nobody knows nuthin and nobody cares.

Sal, you're not too bright many of the police officers bought their tactical weapons from that gun shop, that shop carried some weapons that only police or military personal could buy.

"There are more County residents working in jobs-IN AND OUT of the County than 5 years ago{?}." Really? Figures of 71,300 in 2004 (no quarter stated) compared with 72,100 in the SECOND Quarter of 2008 {pre-recession!} Typical phony statistics. Let's compare apples to apples---today to January 2004.

First only 800 jobs not the 3,000 phony jobs the Krats throw around. Match IN County jobs 1/04 to 1/09 -PREDICTION major job loss. After wasting over $70,000,000 Metroplex actually lost County jobs! Big success? Yeah at tricking the sheeple.

COUNTY SEES BUSINESS GROWTH

Posted on: 02/27/09
Jackie Sher
email: news@spotlightnews.com

In the past week, Schenectady County’s Metroplex Authority announced two new areas of growth to the region:  the move of Malta-based Advanced Energy Conversion, LLC, to the city, and the expansion of the Crosstown Plaza Ocean State Job Lot store.

“I guess when we decided we needed more space we started looking around and it seemed like the best opportunity for us,” said David A. Torrey, Chief Technology Officer at Advanced Energy Conversion. “Beyond just the space issue it’s going to be nice to be a lot closer to Union College.”

Torrey is on the Union Graduate College advisory board where he teaches three graduate courses in the electrical engineering program.

“One of my engineers also teaches in that program, so I think by being closer to Union, there will be some additional linkages that will naturally arise from that,” said Torrey. “It would be a lot more convenient to make use of interns and perhaps start setting up some kind of project program for both undergraduate and graduate students.”

Torrey listed other benefits of relocating, including closer proximity to customers based out of Oneonta and Niskayuna, and it will also provide a shorter commute for many of the company’s employees.

Advanced Energy Conversion grew out of the electric power-engineering program at RPI.  For the past five years, the company has been located at the Saratoga Technology and Energy Park operated by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority in Malta.

The company has signed a lease for 10,300 square feet at 450 Front St., which is already home to Automated Dynamics, another Schenectady–based technology company. Eleven full-time employees will relocate from Malta to Schenectady, and the company expects employment to increase to 15 by 2011.

Once the company moves, it will begin production on its first proprietary product, an inverter for residential solar photovoltaic systems.

Metroplex is providing a $50,000 grant toward relocation and fit-up costs.
“We are very excited to have Advanced Energy Conversion move to Schenectady County.  As headquarters to GE’s renewable energy business, we are seeing more and more interest from companies in this fast-growing industry in locating in Schenectady County,” said Ray Gillen, chairman of the Schenectady Metroplex Development Authority.

Ocean State Job Lots, which currently occupies 25,000 square feet of space at the Crosstown Plaza location, is expanding into an additional 15,000 square feet of space.

“They came here in 2007, and they’re expanding already to create 10 new jobs,” said Gillen. “It was nice because they filled an empty retail spot in the community, and that’s one of our goals.”

Ocean State Job Lots sells discounted merchandise. The company has a 1 million-square-foot distribution center in Rhode Island, which allows it to purchase brand names in large quantities and ship the items quickly to its stores in the Northeast.

Crosstown Plaza is owned by the Robert Lupe family.

“We are pleased to see this expansion by Ocean State Job Lot. The company’s exciting approach to retail has certainly been a success with Schenectady shoppers,” said Shelley Lupe, co-owner, in a written statement.

The question still remains is a handful of jobs worth the millions and millions of dollars spent to bring them here and at what cost to the taxpayer.

I agree Shadow.  Further, the ten new jobs created at Ocean State Job Lots are minimum wage (or near minimum wage) service industry (retail) jobs.

The expenditure of public revenues by Metroplex (approaching $100M during the past 10 years) should be focused on creating high paying and permanent jobs in manufacturing and technology that will enhance the standard of living of county residents and substantially add to the tax base.  This is just more of the same (quasi-) government spending that yields marginal benefits.

The relocation of Advanced Energy Conversion, LLC, however, may yield real benefits for Schenectady County.  The timing of the move and the number of new jobs created is unclear.  I would presume that those presently employed by the company will commute to Schenectady.  As such, we must wait to see if new positions are created that grow the employment of the company.

This is the type of business that Metroplex must focus upon.  As previously opined, the former ALCO location would make for a great technology park.  With an investment by Metroplex to create shovel ready sites and the installation of the required infrastructure (water, sewer, power, internet connectivity, etc.) the ALCO location could attract many more fledgling technology companies that could some day pay considerable return on investment.
