Mayor Bloomberg Declares War On ... Salt
Hizzoner Calls On U.S. Manufacturers To Reduce Salt Content Until It Results In A 50 Percent Cut In 10 Years
Citizens Revolt, Claim NYC Is Turning Into Nanny State
Reporting
Marcia Kramer
NEW YORK (CBS) ―

Singer Jimmy Buffett will never find his "lost shaker of salt" in New York City or any other place in the country if Mayor Michael Bloomberg has his way. The mayor is waging a war on salt and he wants food manufacturers and restaurants to join his army … or else.

It's ironic that the war on salt began on the very day the city was spreading tons of it on the streets to fight a snow storm, but in Bloomberg's view there is good salt … and bad salt.

City officials said that people don't realize the salt content of the things they buy in the supermarket. For example, potato chips you would think are the saltiest thing in the store but they have only 180 milligrams per serving. Turkey meatballs, on the other hand, have 660 milligrams per serving. Marble cake has 300 per serving and chicken noodle soup has nearly 1,400 milligrams of salt per serving.

...

Thomas Frieden, the city's health commissioner, said he wants manufacturers and restaurants to join the war on salt voluntarily. If they don't, the city could pass legislation making it the law.

Mr.Bloomberg must have just been to his doctor.....does he buy his own groceries or does he have a nanny do all his shopping.....just like Guilianni
he probably couldn't tell you how much a gallon of milk cost today.....

Does he want to tell them about the fillers in the crap foods too??? you know the high fructose corn syrup in EVERYTHING.....

Shrinking tax revenues have turned the $1.3 billion November budget hole into a now-$4 billion chasm.

The only way to fix it, sources tell CBS 2 HD, is with:

* $1 billion in program cuts, affecting virtually every city agency.

* New taxes and fees, including more taxes on clothing, a fee for plastic shopping bags in grocery stores and higher fees for lots of other city services.

* The capital budget will be slashed.

* City employees will be asked to pay part of their healthcare costs.

* There will be a reduction of 23,000 jobs through layoffs and attrition. That's more than 7 percent of the city's employees.

Sources say expect fewer cops, firefighters and sanitation workers.

Schools Chancellor Joel Klein has already said he could be forced to eliminate 15,000 education jobs, one third by attrition. The federal stimulus package could save some of the teaching jobs.

That's it, CUT JOBS and increase education.  I'm not saying the city payroll isn't WAY bloated - but for a job and economic stimulus package, they sure do it in funny ways

Good plan, with people losing jobs and their homes NYC has the nerve to raise taxes on the things that people need like clothes fees that people will be forced to pay.

Raising and creating taxes/fees, is just about as lame as you can get. And now with the dems in control, there will be more created government programs than you can shake a stick at. And they have yet to realize.....'who is going to pay for them?'

People are losing jobs by the thousands daily. Businesses are closing. People's retirements have been reduced to at least half. More people have resorted to placing their money under matresses for safe keeping. And what does the government want to do? INCREASE TAXES AND FEES!!!!!!!

Rome would always open the store houses and encourage more gladiator shows to keep the masses occupied and fed.......

Governments job: prevent chaos and anarchy......
