In August 2008, I submitted a suggestion to the governor regarding an alternative to the school tax cap. I recommended the state take over the funding for all the schools in the state. Since the teachers union appears to have the legislative branch wrapped around its little finger and the negotiations are not open to the public, maybe the state should take accountability for their dealings. In addition, the school systems are running all sorts of sly dealings to get additional funds via the property taxpayers. This proposal would remove a significant tax burden from the taxpayers and even the playing field for all schools, while providing the state government the opportunity to oversee the school systems, making the elected officials accountable for ensuring the best education for our children. This can be paid for by a 1 percent increase in the state sales tax and the proceeds from the state lottery system (the public has no real handle on where this money goes). This proposal presented would be of significant help to the limited income people, and those working on the STAR program could be reassigned to more useful jobs for the state. To date, this suggestion has been ignored. I think it’s time to make the suggestion public and get other opinions.
