The city/county has already done a super job of lightening our wallets so we don't have some much weight to carry.

I still don't understand why we need a county government appointee who is receiving $80K+ salary plus benefits to manage a youth program with a budget of $22,500.  What other duties does Mr. Kosiur's position perform?

The County Democrats wouldn't expect laymen like us to understand such complicated governance.  What did I tell you about the dollars and cents?  Don't worry about those minor details,,,it's a program for the "inner city youth".  Don't you know you can't question any government programs that are meant for the kids?  Even if it's plain to see the program's expansion is to provide a soft landing for a political buddy.

County’s new day camp a hit with kids, counselors
Some 60 children join in activities at Central Park

    Score one for Ed Kosiur and his summer day camp at Schenectady’s Central Park.
    The day camp, titled Schenectady County Outreach in Recreation and Education, or SCORE, is drawing on average 60 children per week, about 15 fewer than the maximum enrollment, but it appears to be successful, according to interviews with staff, children and a grandparent.
    Schenectady County legislators and others raised doubts about whether the part-time day camp would attract enough children for the summer and about whether the county should be in the day camp business.
    “I think the program should exist, but the county should not run it,” said Minority Leader Robert Farley, R-Glenville.
    SCORE runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day while most other summer day camps are eight-hour programs. It started in July and runs through early August and serves children from the city ages 8-12.
    SCORE is Kosiur’s first major initiative since becoming special assistant to the commissioner of social services for youth development. The position replaced the director of the Youth Bureau and is viewed by some as a payback to Kosiur, who ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic candidate for the 105th Assembly District last year.
    Kosiur is working with the city, Schenectady County Community College, Schenectady County government agencies and Union College to run the program. It offers structured events each day that include swimming, paddle boating, fishing, tennis, computer classes and horticulture classes.
    On Friday, Schenectady city fi refighters made lunch of Italian food for the children, in keeping with that week’s cultural theme, and discussed career options with them. Members of the Tri-City ValleyCats visited to promote Schenectady Day at their Monday game and to give away free tickets. The first 1,500 people will receive a free bobblehead of Mayor Brian U. Stratton.
The Schenectady County Sheriff’s Department
was on hand to offer its Safe Child Program, which creates a special identification card of the child and enters the child’s fingerprints into a database.
    Camp Director Jennifer Campbell, who ran the city’s recreation program in 2004, said SCORE has helped the children and the youth counselors become more sociable and build their self-esteems.
    “At the end of each week we hand out awards and we try to give each child an award,” she said.
    The youth counselors are from the Schenectady County Job Training Agency and are working there for the summer. There are also students from Union College serving as unit leaders.
‘GREAT PROGRAM’
    Bailey Duffy is a psychology major at Union College. She stayed in Schenectady this summer to work at the day camp rather than return home to Westchester County. “It is a really great program and more children are coming in every day,” she said. “There is something for everyone here.”
    Michael Fenner, 15, and Omattie Chintoman, 17, are counselors. Both said they enjoy working with children and are enjoying the day camp.
    “I love the camp. I enjoy working with children. It’s fun interacting with them,” said Chintoman.
    Fenner, who came to Schenectady from Brooklyn four years ago, said he is having as much fun as the children at the camp. “This is the first time I’ve been to camp,” he said.
    Fenner said he wants to serve as a role model to the children at camp, teaching them respect and letting them know “we are here for them.”
    Campers Erin Center, 10, and Jenna Evers, 10, both of Schenectady, said they love the camp.
    “I was so excited I could barely sleep the first day,” Evers said. “I begged my mom to sign me up.”
    Center said the best part of the day for her is in the morning when the children recite the pledge and sing the national anthem. “We go up to the microphone. We are not shy,” said Center, referring to herself and to her best friend, Evers.
    Evers couldn’t nail down one activity she liked the most. “I have a lot of activities,” she said.
    Both said they would defi nitely come back next year. “It’s fun and we always have something to do,” Evers said.
    Rose Harrell of Schenectady has a granddaughter at the camp, Erica Harrell. “I speak with her every day about what she did at the camp. From what she tells me, I think it is a good thing for the children,” she said.
    Harrell, who attended Friday’s lunch, said, “From what I see it is very organized. The children are enjoying themselves and are not running around screaming.”
    Next year, Harrell said, she will bring Erica and three other children to the day camp.

Other organizations such as the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts church groups provide a good quality summer camp for hundreds of kids every year yet not one word is mentioned about them only Kosiur and the 60 kids from the city.

Well shadow, that is what the gazette and the democratic dictatorship do. The gazette prints ONLY what the dictatorship tells them to. And that is how it works. The DAILY GAZETTE should change it's name to the DAILY DICTATORSHIP OF SCHENECTADY COUNTY! I'm telling ya people...we need another local newspaper. The spotlight is great, with in depth articles, but they don't seem to be into this stuff. They are more of the fluff and stuff!

Pretty high paid babysitters wouldn't ya say? And don't these firefighters go to the schools to promote a possible future as a firefighter.

Understand that I'm not faulting the firefighters AT ALL!! I'm questioning the motives of our government officials and how they handle our tax dollar.

Didn't you mean mis-handle our tax dollars.

The city/county council did some more handling of our tax dollars by appointing the new communications director a position that isn't needed. As Glen Beck would say it's time to break out the torches and pitchforks. Our politicians in Schdy have never handled anything in their lives so why should they start now.

Politicians and think tanks always do well to 'parade' kids/elderly/animals.......or anything that triggers fear, with a controlled reaction, they hope......

I would like to know exactly how much money the county gets from Rotterdam and where it goes. And I would then like to know what share Rotterdam gets. Anyone know where this information can be found?
