I was riding down Rt7 and saw some surveyors at the Mohawk Valley Library Assoc. located by the Flying J's aka Crounse's farm property. So I did a u-ee, turned around and pulled in. There were 2 surveyors there and I asked them if it would be ok for me to ask them what and why they were surveying. They said, "not at all" and told me they were surveying the library's 7 acres of land at the request of the library.

I further explained to them how developers were looking to develop the Rt7 corridor. And with that they said, "We are always the first on the scene when someone or something this size is looking to sell". That was all that they knew.

So then I called the library directly. The girl I talked to said that she was not at liberty to discuss anything regarding the property. She did give me the name and phone number of the attorney that is handling "whatever it is they are handling". She said that their attorney told them to direct all property inquirers to them(the attorney). So I did call and left a message. I'm just waiting for a call back.

I wouldn't be surprised if they ARE selling.

How many times recently has anyone here gone to a physical library recently?  I can't remember the last time I was inside a SCPL branch.  MVLA used to have a significant function in the loaning of materials, especially when the "bookmobile" was in service.  I really wonder how much "Interlibrary loan" they do nowadays since that new fangled gadget "internet" cam e along.

Has anyone told these perspective developers that there is absolutely NO infrastructure there on Rt7? Haven't they heard about the dumping of McLanes distribution center?

I personally have been to the Rotterdam branch at least 5 or 6 times this year.  I haven't been down to the main branch in a little while, but that's mostly because of location and the fact that the Rotterdam branch has been doing rather well keeping things stocked that I wanted.

Also, my son told me that they now charge if you want to borrow a book from a different library with the inter-library loan program.

Just explain this to me...if the main branch is getting ready any time to close down for the next 18 months, what are the new employees who are currently being hired going to be doing?

Actually, I visit "the library" several times per month, sometimes several times per week.  I use the Schenectady Main Branch, the Rotterdam Branch, and the Guilderland Library regularly.  So do my family members.  Interestingly, the Guilderland Library is considering expansion to roughly double in size...and their library is already stellar.

The Internet is great...but it will never replace the library.  There are numerous reference materials you'll never have access to on the web.  And these days, you can borrow more than books.  One nice thing a computer provides though is access to the "card catalogue" so you can reserve your books ahead of time, renew online, etc.  And you have access to ALL the libraries in the system.

The library and the post office remain two of the absolute best bargains on the face of the planet.

I use the library pretty regularly....I love to read and cannot fathom reading for pleasure on my computer screen.....bizarre to me but probably normal by the time this generation in school now gets into the world......

I do hope that the Rotterdam town board is working on updating the comp. plan before Rt7 becomes a reality. Which may be sooner than we think. REALLY!

I'm disappointed we're still talking about an update.  Wal-Mart was an eye-opener a few years ago that the Town was unprepared...and it still isn't done.  Rt 7 has been in play for at least that long (McLanes was proposed some time back) and here we stare at parcels getting gobbled up like crazy.

It's not acceptable to be "working on it" any more.  It's embarassing that it isn't done and it obviously isn't a priority either.  Rotterdam is destined to become a non-descript drive-through if the Town doesn't get an adequate plan in place pronto.  Know what?  They won't get it done this year no matter how hard they try.  I've got a one-word solution for you:  MORATORIUM.

Michael maybe they're forming a committee to study the possibility of updating the comp plan. That's good for at least 4 to 5 years.

I received a call back from the attorney for the MVLA. Her name is Kathryn McCary. She was very nice but she also could not tell me much. I did ask her that if we needed an attorney if she would represent us too. She said that she couldn't because it would be a conflict of interest since she is representing the library.

I really don't know if this particular branch is actually owned by Schenectady County or is just an intergovernmental branch other than the county.

So I don't know anymore now than I did before.
