Tom Woodman, managing editor for the Daily Gazette in Schenectady, N.Y., will leave his position at the newspaper to take a job as publisher of The Adirondack Explorer.
Woodman revealed his plans Monday in a memo he sent to employees, and later confirmed the announcement with The Business Review.
He will make the transition by late summer. During his 26-year career at the Daily Gazette, he was reporter, editorial writer and Sunday editor before taking over as managing editor.
The Adirondack Explorer is a bimonthly news magazine published by a nonprofit corporation founded 10 years ago. The Saranac Lake-based publication provides information about the 6-million-acre Adirondack Park.
An active outdoorsman, Woodman said the career change will allow him to "contribute to a region with which I have strong connections, and to remain in journalism while opening the possibility of branching into other forms of publishing and communication."
Dick Bemis, the Adirondack Explorer's current publisher, will step down when Woodman comes on board but plans to continue his obligations as the nonprofit's chairman of the board.
"Tom has all the right sympathies, interests and skills for the job, and we couldn't be happier," he said.
