Quoted from JoAnn
One has to give the democrats credit for using the media for their voice to be heard. But it would be nice to hear from the opposing parties now and then too. I mean there still is an opposing party, right?

Lemme check with Buchanan and I'll get back to you.

County taxpayers deserve more credit than Mayor Stratton

Upon reading Mr. John Massaroni’s May 14 letter, “Mayor should be congratulated on budget surplus,” I have a few concerns. Specifically, I wonder if the writer understands where the money is coming from that is bringing the city out of its deficit. He was amazed “. . . that this was done while making major improvements to Schenectady’s downtown and business districts.” I would remind the writer that these improvements were not done on the dime of the city, but rather on the backs of residents and visitors across the county.
Many of these improvements have been made from specific funds meant to help things across the county, not just in the city, such as the Schenectady Metroplex. This is tax money that is siphoned from every single resident and visitor to the city, towns and villages throughout the county, a majority of which is being spent in downtown Schenectady.
While I do realize that not all of these changes are made by the Metroplex, many of them are, which in turn stops residents and business owners from increasing their business throughout the county.
Proctors has made major improvements, and I hope to see many more over the next few years, since this is also taking money from visitors to the county. A portion of this money comes in the form of a bed tax at all hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts throughout the county, with a sum of $750,000 annexed off the front of this money to be designated directly to Proctors. This bed tax is money that could otherwise be spent at local business directly, instead of handed out by the government as it sees fi t.
So, looking at who should be congratulated on the turnaround of the city of Schenectady, I think that we shouldn’t be looking solely at Mayor Stratton, unless you say that the turnaround of the state of finances in Schenectady is only due to the millions collected in garbage “fees” in the past four years. Instead, we should actually be looking at every single resident and visitor who buys anything in the county for the wonderful turnaround of the city.
Kudos may go to Mayor Stratton to an extent, but I think it really goes to every person who has had money taken out of his or her pocket by the county to truly help turn around the city of Schenectady.
